Vanessa Velasquez, foreign student from Columbia was a repeat visitor to our group. Vanessa, who is staying with Mary Marana, spoke to the group last summer. The biggest change was her very much improved English. She explained that her parents decided that being a foreign student would be a valuable experience for her after she graduated at 16. She had neglected to take any English
classes, however, and had to "bribe" one of her sister's English instructors into signing her papers and so arrived armed only with a giant Spanish English dictionary and the hope that she could learn quickly. Vanessa was very emotional about her attachment to her American family and talked about her trip to Miami and a visit to a North Dakota farm. She explained,
"I have never been to a farm and driving a tractor is cool."
Her plans for the future have changed because of her school experiences in Brainerd. She took a class in TV productions and decided to go home and study to be a television announcer and possibly return to work in the United States. Vanessa is a very personable girl and was very entertaining. Kudos to the Maranas for their willingness to be involved.

Sertoman of the Day

David Tagtmeier who is Program Director for the Family YMCA was our Sertoman of the Day today. He recently returned to Sertoma and his goal is to become an active member of the club and earn his gem award. David has been married for 19 years to his high school sweetheart and links the birth of his three children to the success of the Minnesota Twins (Unfortunately he is not planning any more children so he says the future of the Twins looks rather bleak) . He is very active in Boy Scouts including being Caretaker of the Parker Scout Reservation.

John Nelson closes his eyes and crosses his fingers as he campaigns for his candidate for 3rd Vice President, Jim Potvin who won by a narrow margin. Kim Hauglie is our new Secretary . The tie for Treasurer was broken by one vote in a revote and went to Matt Engen. Both the secretary and the treasurer will serve for 2 years--their first year will be as assistant to the current office holder. |
