Today was a day with no formal program and many exciting things to do. President Milo Johnson announced all the awards that were presented at the Regional Convention, some at the district and some at the regional level: Bulletin, Convention Attendance, Sertoman of the Year, National Heritage, Outstanding Secretary. and Sertoma Foundation Patron.
Brenda Meech is shown working on updating the banners with the
patches from the convention. Milo congratulated Sheila Redding who was elected to the position of International Director. Sheila spoke to our group recently and has many good connections to our local group including membership in Camp Sertoma. The next item on the agenda was a presentation by Dave Burgraff who was very pleased with the $74,000 total so far raised against the $250,000 endowment goal. Our group bought about $400 in $10 Memorial Pins, especially after they learned that the pins exempted a person from fines until September if it is worn to the meeting. A certain attorney got fined anyway today for calling the sergeant a nasty name before he put on his pin. The final item on the agenda was to open the meeting for nominations for officers. Milo explained that the recent Board Meeting saw some changes to the election procedure. Our new treasurer-elect and secretary-elect will now assume the duties of assistant to the current office holder thus making the term a two year one. For third vice president the following nominations were accepted: Reed Campbell nominated Rory Coit, Bonnie Franke nominated Melody Banks, and John Rabion nominated Jim Potvin. For the position of treasurer the following nominations were accepted: Cathy Christensen nominated Matt Engen and Pam Bye nominated Joyce Anderson. Only one nomination by Mike Howard stood for the secretary position --Kim Hauglie. Milo also indicated that write-ins were acceptable.

An Editorial by Pam Sachs
Well, my first year as an official member of the Sertoma Club is drawing to a close. Jeff Olsen did make me an unofficial member many years ago when he first came to town and got me involved in activities at Camp Confidence including the Mariucci Festival (as it was called then). I helped out with many great people like Chuck Bartels, Gary Loge and Hopper, some of which I already knew and some of which were new to me. I knew what a hard-working fun bunch of people Sertomans were and it was one of the first things on my agenda- to become a
"real" member when I retired from my teaching career.
I saw this tradition continue this last Wednesday. Mike Boen needed a
"few" people to put together the prototype "FISH GUTTERS"
that he hopes will become a major fund-raising item for our club right after the meeting. They will be test marketed this weekend in several bait stores. Before he knew it about 20 people were poking, smoothing, attaching and generally pitching in to get the fish gutters ready to sell. This is exactly what Sertoma is all about. Someone says,
"This needs to be done" and if Sertoma is involved, it happens. This year has allowed me to be involved in two major events- the start of Camp Sertoma and the Casino Fund Raiser. But it is not the fund raising or the social activities that make Sertoma what it is, it is the self satisfaction each and every member who becomes involved in the club feels when their contribution of time results in another project well done. It's been a great year so far and I am looking forward to many more. To anyone who is thinking about becoming a Sertoman, don't think --just join the best service club in Brainerd.
