Brainerd Noon Sertoma covered a broad spectrum of interests at
today's meeting ranging from arts and artists through auto racing
and curling. Our first guest was Ruth Weaver from the Crossing
Arts Alliance. She came to spread the good word about the
excitement at the Franklin Arts Center. The CAA has been around
for thirty years and they included "crossing" in their name to
recognize the Brainerd area's railroad roots. She explained that
Art Space, a real estate agency, actually owns the building. Their
goals is to develop suitable buildings into combined working and
living areas for artists who often need unique spaces. The
apartment part of the building will be available next year. The
school district continues to be involved with renting space for
student activities. There currently are 40 artists covering the
whole spectrum of studies at Franklin. To get to know them all,
plan on attending one of the Second Saturday celebrations. All of
the artists try to be available and it also includes Flipside, a
program of kids' activities. She concluded her part of the program
with a special thank you to CTC for their tremendous support of
FAC. She handed out their current brochure which features the
Lakes Area Guide to the Artist as well as local art and creative
activities. |
|
|
Then we proceeded to the awards ceremony. Bill Goers and John Raboin presented the curling awards. Bill actually had some
Olympic music he played on the harmonica. Their cheap but much
touted medals were presented to Kris Hoheisel, Bill Goers, and
Dick Stoltman who won bronze, silver and gold respectively.
Actually, this activity was received with a great deal of
enthusiasm by those who participated and there is already talk of
more fun next year. |

|
Finally, Jed Copham and Jim Rau hit the podium and added the
roar of racing to our program. Jed is the new owner of the
Brainerd International Raceway. He was visiting Sertoma to invite
us to participate in their fund raising activities and looking for
suggestions to help make BIR a welcome part of the neighborhood
again. Jim presented opportunities for fundraising groups that
include ticket selling and running, parking and reserved seating
staff. They are also open to suggestions such as the one Rick
Besmehn made about offering flat fees. Jed concluded the speech
with his statement, "We want to return BIR to the status of
something the Brainerd area can be proud of." |

their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and

-
The Dog Pound got a lecture from Kari Barnes today--they are too
shy to stand up and be counted in the Pipe and Drape thank you.
-
President Mau will be in Florida on the Beach next week. He will
be quietly reciting the Peter Piper to practice with
alliteration (actually he should be saying Sue Slaybaugh over
and over). He is handing the podium over to his next VP, Julia
the head of the Rude Patrol. She gave everyone a "don't talk
when someone is at the podium speech" and then stood her ground
when the sergeants tried to fine her.
-
Thanks John Raboin for his help getting Lori Rubin involved in
the planning for '08. She did a terrific job of lining up the
speaker. John has made his second meeting dressed in his lawyer
suit. We were greeted in style today.
-
Pam was wondering what artistic skill the racing guys had when
she thought we only had one program today. She also got the razz
ma dazz for updating the dating base. All singles need to get
their info into her and she will match them up.
-
Jeff Olson got the award for asking the "beer by the Jaycees"
question for the racing guys.
-
Kathy Williams got accused of being a "dip" today. HMM what is
the rest of the story.
-
Our poor president has gotten to the point where he is
depositing money with the Sergeants so he doesn't have to
remember it every week.
-
Scott Fisher got the closest liquor store to the FAC award
today--a $2 fine of course.
