Our handsome young guest stood before us today to explain about
Camp ASL and the impact it has had on his life. Adam Rademacher
is a 2000 graduate of Brainerd High School who used his
post-secondary option to get two years of college behind him
while he was attending high school. His interest in American
Sign Language started at a very young age basically because he
was good friends with some deaf students. His formal studies at
CLC lead him to choose free lance interpreting as a career. He
attended Camp ASL as a student and it inspired him to become the
youngest interpreter ever certified in the United States.
Currently he and two other interpreters working through an
agency trying to cover the needs of a large area that stretches
from Brainerd all the way to Bemidji. Adam explained that rural
Minnesota needs more interpreters. The Camp gives interpreters
an opportunity to practice their skills since it is a full
immersion weekend with no speech allowed. One of the reasons
this Camp is so vital is because interpreters work one on one
with their clients and have very little chance to interact with
their peers. Over two hundred people at three levels attend the
session at Camp Courage North in Lake George, Bemidji. Adam went
on to answer questions about American Sign Language. Sertoma’s
interest in this topic is close to everyone’s heart since this
is a focus of our club as well as all others. ASL is a language
in itself with its own syntax and grammar. Each country has its
own sign language. Facial expressions, body language, the shape
of the mouth, the size of the movement, and the direction of the
movement all affect the language. A language that doesn’t change
dies, so ASL is constantly changing and thus the need for the
Camp. We enjoyed Adam’s most embarrassing moment—he did not
realize that he was signing for a student in a sex education
class until he got there and had the total attention of the
other 30 students in the class during the “good” parts. Adam is
currently working on getting medical certification so that he is
qualified to work with doctors and hospitals dealing with deaf
patients. |

Announcements |
|
Be there Sunday for Pipe and Drape take down at 4:00 -
fifty or more people are needed. |
|
Sertoma International Foundation contribution of $25 per
member has been changed from automatic to individual choice as of
the last Board meeting. This is mainly because many people feel
this money should remain in the local area. You will have to
indicate on your next billing statement whether you wish to
continue to contribute. Since this is a very controversial
topic, more time will be scheduled at an upcoming meeting to clear
up all questions. |
|
Kari Robinson has one more room available for the regional
convention in Mankato—she needs to hear from you if you still
want to attend by next meeting. If Verna Hawkinson or Colleen
Reynolds wishes to collect their $10, they need to call in to win. |

(Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people
at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided
with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the
social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties.
You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to

Sertoman of the Day
|
Sertoman
of the Day Paul Gropper was Sertoman of the Day today. Paul has
been a member since 1996. His sponsor was Linda Fischer who is
no longer a member of the club. Paul talked about his work with
the social committee and being named Rookie of the Year in 1997.
Rory added that Paul has been involved in almost every major
project we have had since he started in the club. Paul has
worked for Lakes Printing for 16 years and currently handles
outside sales. Rory also expressed the club’s appreciation to
Lakes for all its support. As a newly married man, Paul and his
wife Liza are looking forward to a May Day baby. Paul used to be
an avid golfer but he has decided his new hobby is running the
remote on the sports channels. He wouldn’t elaborate about his
most embarrassing moment which happened at a Perch Jerk. You
will just have to find someone who was there to get the rest of
the story. |

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.
