The National Heritage Essay winners, their parents and their teachers were the honored guests at today’s meeting (see picture below). They were introduced by Reed Campbell who chaired the committee this year. He thanked the other members for their participation. Judges included Karla Nelson, Jeff Olson, Karen Owen, Bill Mitsch, and Pam Sachs. Matt Husemann joined us with his mother Lorelie and his teacher Mrs. Warren from the Baxter school. Matt’s essay on when freedom is worth fighting for centered around being able to choose. We learned some interesting facts about women in Afghanistan. He was followed by Katie Paschelke who was accompanied by her mother Carole and her teacher Mr. Danielson. Katie’s speech was especially moving since her father, James, is currently serving in Kosovo and is a Desert Storm veteran. Blaine Bubalo was the 1st place winner. His proud parents are Keith and Lori and his teacher is Mrs. Johnson from Riverside. Blaine based his essay on Lee Greenwood’s song, “God Bless America” and left us all with the feeling that we are more united and stronger as a country because we have stood up and fought when challenged by 9/11.  Certificates and prizes of savings bonds amounting to $100, $150, and $200 were awarded to the three top essayists. Honorable mentions who received a cash award of $20 each went to: Michael Smith (Mrs. Agre, Baxter School), Rick Belgum (Mrs. Warren, Baxter School), Kayla Mudgett (Mrs. Wallace, Lowell School), Jack Luke (Mrs. Johnson, Riverside School), Katie Guderjohn (Mrs. Johnson, Riverside School), Samantha Gonnion (Mrs. Taatjes, Nisswa School) and Kate Le Page (Mr. Danielson, Whittier School). Over 200 students competed in this year’s contest and Sertoma wishes to thank the students and their teachers for all their efforts.

Announcements
Meal specification sheets have been developed and approved by the Board. See Rory Coit if you wish to participate in the bidding for meal service to Sertomans.
The Flag Project is going full speed ahead since we plan to have flags in place for May 15th. Tami Webb is looking for some help since she is a bit “lame” for door to door selling right now. Please take some contracts and get your neighboring businesses to participate. Give the pink copy to the business, retain the other two, and be sure to return any unused contracts! If Randy Hukriede and Greg Larson are paying attention, they can call in to win their sawbuck this week.

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Patty Hartman.

Sertoman of the Day
Trent Bauman - Setoman of the DayTrent Bauman got quite a laugh when he admitted he has been trying for two weeks to come up with a most embarrassing moment. His tale of falling on his face at a crowded boat launching, losing his wallet in the lake, and bruising or breaking something to the extent that he couldn’t fish for a week was quite hilarious. However, next time he is Sertoman of the day he might have to mention using the word “pissed” in front of our elementary audience. Trent joined Sertoma because of our newly engaged member Jason Bertram. He and his wife Andrea moved to Brainerd because he is a city boy who has decided the quality of life in northern Minnesota is very attractive. They have a two month old son. Trent likes fishing and hunting of course. Trent works for Charter Media, the third largest cable company in the nation in sales and advertising. He is proud of the fact that Charter, because of its high volume of business, is on the cutting edge of technology. He has been with the company four years. Thanks for sharing your life with us Trent.
Of Note:
Both Julia and Carmen wanted to thank Sertoma for their support in the recent bereavement.
The largest Sertoma group in the world is now at 210 members.
Rumors Corner:
  • John Raboin has opened up Raboins House of Pancakes—guess complaining about him being too quiet had some effect.
  • Welcome back Bob Sherman and Amy Doyle. Hi Mark Hegstrom—nice to see you at a meeting also.
  • WE all tried to behave for the children and no fines were collected since we didn’t have time so everyone should be prepared for next week.
  • Acting President Rory Coit shared his big fish story.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the current photographs or check out the new online directory go to:  http://communities.msn.com/BrainerdNoonSertoma/_whatsnew.msnw
