Program
Wendy Lee - Brainerd Public Library ManagerOne of my favorite places in the whole world was the topic of today’s program. One of my earliest memories is skipping along the sidewalk, walking with my mother to the library to check out some more books to read. Wendy Lee, Brainerd Public Library Manager, stepped before us to talk about kids and books. First she gave us a little background on herself, including the fact that in order to hold her job you need to have a Master’s Degree in Library Science. She talked extensively about how popular the summer library program for preteens has been. The emphasis is simply on getting children to read read read in the summer since it is a proven fact that they retain their school skills better over the break if they do. The culmination of this program is a party for the kids where they all get a book of their very own to keep. This summer’s program includes some special events including a presentation by the Science Museum, a visit from a children’s author Sharon Carlson, and storyteller Jack Pearson. Wendy decided two years ago to expand this program to continue beyond the twelve year olds. This program has grown from 94 the first year to 128 the second. This age group especially enjoys the library mystery at the end. Wendy encouraged the grown-ups to attend the speaker series the first Thursday of the months of September through May and the Summer Brown Bag Speakers Seminars. Remember your first library card is free and you can check out a book anywhere in Minnesota and return it to Brainerd. Remember the Paperback Book Sale March 23-24 and the used book sale the 25-27. Donations of good paperbacks are accepted all year long and proceeds are used to buy new books for the library.

Sertoman of the Day
Lisa Shattuck - Sertoman of the DayLisa Shattuck brought us best regards from her current employer Madden’s on Gull Lake. Lisa was a very appropriate speaker since she is a native of Brainerd and comes from what she described as a big fun Irish Catholic family.

She has three children and has been divorced for the past ten years. She started her career at Maddens in 1978 and has worked there off and on since. She worked her way up from desk clerk though reservation manager to “event manager” which she describes as meeting, greeting and holding hands. Kathy Williams was her sponsor and she feels that she is stepping in big shoes being the Madden’s member after so many years of representation by Bob Sherman. Her most embarrassing moment involved a snowmobile and the ladies room and falling flat on her face.
Of Note:
Our sympathies go out to two families this week. Carmen Green, former member, lost her husband to a heart attack. Julia Sullivan is dealing with the loss of her stepson.
We got a nice thank you from the Junior Achievement group. This money is earmarked for the annual trip to Junior Achievement Exchange City. Tom Pearson, President, ended the letter with the following statement, “At Junior Achievement, we believe that nothing is more important than providing our young people with the knowledge and skill needed to understand and value free enterprise in our community.”
Rumors Corner:
  • Tom Rosenberger got fined by acting Sergeant Brian Lehman for all the tennis shoes the guerillas in Haiti are wearing.
  • Other acting Sergeant Charlie Bartles gave Pooch a “for sure” fine—figured it was something Swedish not Irish. If Rod Converse or Scott Fisher, who are best buddies with Charlie Bartels, read this and call, they can be ten dollars richer.
  • Reed Campbell got a TV head glare fine.
  • Everyone at Joe Schulte’s table who didn’t have a y chromosome got fined—that would be Joe.
  • Our acting President Dave Clausen ordered the semi vegetarian lefthanders hi fiber rabbit special for lunch (see photo)—greenery for St Patty’s Day.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the current photographs or check out the new online directory go to:  http://communities.msn.com/BrainerdNoonSertoma/_whatsnew.msnw
