A strong dose of patriotism on the brink of the beginning of a
war in Iraq was the program at today's Brainerd Noon Sertoma
meeting. This infusion of the spirit that moves American to
unite in support of our country's decision to go to war to stop
terrorism came from three essays presented by fifth graders in
the 20th Annual Sertoma Heritage Essay Contest. Bruce Heilman,
Director of the Contest, commented, "This year we had the
largest number of participants, two hundred sixty eight to be
exact, and this is very much related to the world situation at
this time." Winner Kellie Barnaby summed up the need to fight
for freedom in her last paragraph. She said, "When is freedom
worth fighting for? I believe we should fight for freedom if
everyone is not being treated fairly, when people are in danger
and need help, and lastly when cruel people are leaders. It is
scary to think that there might be a war soon." Kellie is the
daughter of Mike and Renee Barnaby. Her teacher was Pam Warren
and goes to Baxter. The second and third place winners both came
from Riverside and their teacher was Heidi Johnson. Nick Swenson
used some strong words at the beginning of his essay. He said,
"Misery, gloominess and sorrow. To me these words mean the
opposite of freedom." He then went on to explain even the
children are miserable and having nightmares because of the
terrorist threats that make fighting for freedom necessary.
Anastasia Buscher used an excellent comparison to start her
essay. She said, "There are many reasons to fight for freedom.
If you wrote them all down, tied them in a knot, and stretched
them out, they could probably fit around the earth." Honorable
mention went to seven other essayists: Melissa Morey (Baxter),
Ethan Davis (Whittier), Samantha Harting (Baxter), Carsten
Nelson (Baxter), Briley Johnson (Riverside),Will Nystrom
(Baxter), and Alexandra Buscher(Riverside). Special thanks goes
to the judges Julia Sullivan of Godfather's Pizza, Pam Sachs,
Reed Campbell of Bremer Banks, Bruce Heilman from Atlas Abstract
and Title, and Karen Owen of MidAmerica Mortgages.

| Notes |
|
In these difficult times, it is important that we spend some time
thinking about what it means to be an American soldier facing war
in Iraq. Instead of humor or rumors this week, let us all spend a
few minutes of thoughts and prayers for Americans away from home
who are trying to stop the terrorism that our young people wrote
about so eloquently in their Heritage essays. |

Find a Sawbuck Corner: Call 829-7761
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |
