The 2007-2008 Rookie Class of Sertomans was featured at the
March 12th meeting of the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club. Jeff
Fitch and Anna Gorecky presented a check for $1,318.31 to
Holly Ailts (with Cleo and Sage), Susan Thurlow (with Maeve),
Karen Johnson(with Chase), and Susan Voss(with Katie). These
four core members of the Brainerd Therapy Connection which
was started in the fall of 2007 shared their experiences
with the group. The money raised by the Rookies will help
them to expand their program to include training,
coordinated scheduling of dog visits, and promotion of the
program. Holly explained the benefits of taking a dog to
visit in an environment such as Bethany Good Samaritan, the
St. Joseph's Grace Unit, the Community Behavioral Health
Hospital, the Senior Center and Edgewood Vista. Interaction
with therapy teams provides socialization, mental
stimulation, physical contact, entertainment, conversation,
acceptance and so much more. Dogs are non-judgmental
companions who can bring laughter and joy in to the lives of
many. In many care settings, people are separated from the
animal companionship that they enjoyed throughout their
lives and therapy dogs can help people reconnect with happy
memories. Training involves dog testing, obedience classes,
and being associated with an accredited group that has
insurance. Karen Johnson shared an experience at the Grace
Unit where Chase was instrumental in calming an out of
control patient and convincing him to return to his room.
Holly talked about what a comfort it was to lonely people to
have both the human contact and the canine affection
especially when they are grieving. Susan Voss explained that
Katie showed her natural ability at the age of six months
when she was allowed to visit Susan's sister who was
recovering from a heart attack. Katie hadn't had any
training, but she convinced Susan that they both had a
mission to help people. Holly's Cleo is very adept at
working with people with developmental disabilities. As
Holly remarked, "If you want to hang out with dogs and help
provide companionship for lonely people, this is the program
for you."

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half

Dear Sertoma, I would like to thank the committee responsible for
putting together the Sertoma Works Award and acknowledge my
thanks for being included as one of the individuals acknowledged
on the plaque. We are all aware that it takes many hands to
achieve what we as a service organization are accomplishing. I'm
very proud to be a part of it and I am also very excited about
the great future that lies ahead for the Brainerd Noon Sertoma
Club. Thanks again-Dave Clausen
Dear Sertoma, I want to thank all of you for the great gift of
the Sears pre-paid $50 gift card. It will got to good use as I'm
in the process of building a new home and there are many items I
have my eye on at Sears. I also wanted to thank you for the
wonderful Christmas Lights displays. My young grandson was in
awe of all the lights and displays. He finally allowed himself
to sit in Santa's lap, whish was a surprise to us. Keep up the
good work! Arthur L May
Keep Rose Hauge in your prayers, she is dealing with the loss
of her mother. Welcome three new Sertoma members: Jim Whistler
(Miracle Ear), Lisa Houle (Nelson Advertising) and Matt Davis
(Lakes Area Homes) Many thanks to all who helped with the
Aitkin Pipe and Drape. |
