 The
seventh annual Komen Brainerd Lakes Race for the Cure will be held
on Saturday, July 1, 2006 at Don Adamson Field at the Brainerd
High School. Christie Jelinski, Chairperson and Lori Kodet, Race
Chairperson, joined us to urge us to become a part of this effort
that grows every year. The Susan Koman Foundation has been
sponsoring races to cure breast cancer for 20 years. Last year
1800 people participated in the race and this year they are
looking to have 2,000. Lori is a special person, she is one of 94
local cancer survivors involved in this activity and is on her
10th year of remission. Businesses can become gold ($5,000),
silver ($3,000) or bronze ($1,000) contributors and get their
names on the back of the participants shirt. These donations can
be cash or in kind items. Smaller donations also help in many ways
including items or coupons for the goody bags. Seventy five
percent of the funds stay in Cass and Crow Wing counties to
provide breast cancer screening additional training and education
to the public. The Koman Foundation is a global leader in the
search for a cure with their award and research grants. Our local
race is a big attraction with participants from 25 states last
year. One woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three
minutes and one woman will die of breast cancer every thirteen
minutes in the United States. You can get more details by going to
www.brainerdlakesrace.org. |

| Sertoman of the Day |
Jim
Grant who has been a member since ’97, was today’s honored
Sertoman. He was brought into the club by Dave Burggraph. His
business, Jim’s Electric, has been in the Baxter area since l986.
His family owned company does all styles of electrical work from
the smallest service work to contracts in excess of one million
dollars. They are located in the Baxter Industrial Park. Jim
related many personal incidents including the fact that he knew
that he was going to marry his wife of 32 years, Nancy, after just
one date. He talked about the joys of having a granddaughter climb
in your lap and ask you to read her a book. His hobbies include
riding motorcycle, hunting, and relaxing on the pontoon boat in
the summer. His most embarrassing moment was concluded with the
comment, “That’s why you wear a motorcycle helmet, so that nobody
recognizes you!” He encouraged everyone to participate in the
cancer benefit for Regan Loss who has worked for him for many
years. It will be held Saturday, April 29th at the Eagles Club in
Brainerd. |
