Program
Brainerd Sertoma SpeakerCraig R. Fink, President of Denali Real Estate was introduced to the group by Rob Johnson who is working with this group that has the go ahead from the owners to develop the Pine Meadows area.

In the last four years, the company that owns the golf course has lost about $450,000. However, the owners have ties to the community and they were looking for someone to develop the property but also to take into account the quality of life.

The Denali Group is presently hampered by the moratorium in Baxter of PUD (Planned Unit Development) projects. Randy Hukriede was pretty much in the no comment stage when he was asked about Baxter Council’s feelings on this matter. Craig explained that he and his wife have moved here and are building a home. The company’s vision for the development which they call “Baxter Town Center” includes preserving as much green space as possible, concentrating on residential housing, including a medical clinic/healthcare center/pharmacy, and developing office space and a retail shopping destination that caters to pedestrians, small business owners and upscale retailers to give shoppers a Baxter destination. Mr. Fink told us,” It is not a matter of if but when it will be developed.”

One of the major factors that will lead to this development is the necessity to expand Cypress Road to handle the increased traffic that is already clogging the highways. This area encompasses approximately 100 acres. Commercial costs to retailers was a big question at the end and Rob explained that Baxter might have to change its rule against mixed commercial and housing units to keep those costs down.

Thanks Pat Charlson for taking notes!!!!

Announcements
Pipe and Drape hits the majors in the upcoming weeks which means that everyone needs to volunteer some time for these big events including Rolfings, Women’s Expo, and the MMBA Show. See the info below and contact Julia Sullivan to sign up.
March 15 - Board Meeting Tuesday, 7 p.m. Northwinds Grill with discussion of regional bid, pipe and drape issues and the proposed park. Tom Tom SwansonSwanson was at the meeting with his development proposal and a request for us to support a Sertoma Park.

Tom and his partner will donate a little over two acres of valuable land and do the preparation work for cost. This would include electricity and might be a possible location for our lights project also. We would then develop the park including landscaping and equipment costs and then donate the park to the City of Brainerd. Click here to see the proposed Sertoma Park site

The Parks and Recreation Committee will meet at 3:30 at City Hall of Monday to discuss this matter. We voted to support the Park under the condition that the Parks and Recreation will accept it. We would need to commit to maintaining the park.

May 5 - 7  Regional Convention in Aberdeen S.D. Please plan on attending this event that has many special events. Tami Webb gave a presentation in her capacity as District Governor and noting that we will be making our bid for the 2008 Convention. We actually have two proposals—one to host locally and one to host on a cruise.

Sertoman of the Day
Sertoman of the Day - Mary MaranaMary Marana was today’s honored Sertoman. She introduced us to her family, Lane and Justin, and explained that her hard of hearing child was a big impetus behind her joining Sertoma in 1993.

Mary told us a very amusing account of her most embarrassing moment to lead into her 16 year career with KLKS also known as KLakes Radio. They are located in Breezy Point but they also have a Brainerd Sales Office. It is a one owner family business that helps companies develop marketing plans to increase business. She is an account executive.

Mary enjoys reading, cooking, traveling, working in the yard and garden, and spending time with her friends. She is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Crisis Line and has served as Sergeant and Chaplain for Sertoma as well as being involved in Pipe and Drape. Lynn Franz was her sponsor.
