Program
Brainerd Area Sertoma ClubSteve Augustinack, Dennis Renowski and William Stroot-Director of Operations at CTC, were in charge of our program today. Using lots of props and maps they explained the changes in fiber optics that have come about because of the partnership between the school district and CTC. The school district’s goal was to set up fiber connections between all of the school buildings which has been accomplished. CTC’s job is to maintain the system and to expand it to include the Brainerd, Baxter, and Nisswa area. Gus explained that CTC was chosen through the bid/spec process but they were definitely the best choice since they have the same cooperative community orientation that Sertoma does. Washington School is the central location for the separate Baxter, Brainerd rings of fiber optics. Rings are best since they are survivable. If they are cut they continue to work by reversing themselves. In May CTC will start to bring fiber to homes in the Baxter area with a three year plan to cover the whole area. The main advantage of fiber is the broad 37 megabit width, but it also includes color multiplexing, federal loans pending to bring the system to the rural area between Brainerd and Nisswa, no electrical interference, and digital allows you to receive no interference and make your smart system extend outside the home. A question and answer period followed. The major question was answered when William explained that installation costs to connect to homes would be covered if the home owner connects while the work is being done. One hundred and nine dollars a month would cover telephone, internet and digital TV.

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
