A very surprised Mary Paine accepted the Sertoman Service to
Mankind Award at the noon meeting. Melody Banks gave the
following tribute: "The highest award we as Sertomans can bestow
upon an individual is the Service to Mankind award. fas 829-7761
Todd Dunlap. Being the recipient of an award of such prestige
requires a lot of work and dedication on the part of the
honoree. We look for those that have a great and long history of
serving the community. This year's award winner has such a
history--wherever she has traveled she has served others." She
went on to describe Mary's career as a nurse and included her
volunteer work with the March of Dimes, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts,
PTA and school volunteers. Mary was mostly honored for her
outstanding work with diabetes. She was diagnosed in the late
1980's and decided not to let this slow her down. As her
co-worker Sandra Lewis stated, "many people live with the trials
of diabetes every day, but never get involved in outreach or
counseling others that live with it." Mary is the exact
opposite. She never misses an opportunity to educate others on
what diabetes is and what is like to live with it. She
facilitates supports groups, gathers volunteers, and is very
involved with the Diabetes Education Program at St. Joseph's
Hospital. The simple quote from one of those who nominated our
winner for this award sums up Mary Paine, "Not only is she a
great advocate for diabetes, she is a caring genuine person." |

valuable this experience is for young writers. They learn so much
more when they are writing for an audience and a purpose. |
Just a gentle reminder. Your hardworking social
committee only had 60 people signed up to see the Elvis show
which starts at 6:45 with appetizers and a social hour, with show
time from 8:00 to 10:30 on Saturday March 16th at the Elks. Come and
support the group and bring a potential new member. The steak and
lobster contest is on its second round and your team could be a
winner again or for the first time. |

Thank-you Sertoma: |
- Many thanks to your club for the generous donation of $500
for our newborn hearing screening equipment. Your check was the
first one that was delivered in person thanks to Carmen and
Greg. The Mille Lacs Messenger was here and took pictures and
will be putting an article in the paper that describes the New
Born Hearing Screen Program and organizations that have
donated--Ruth Burandt Mille Lacks Health System.
- Than you for you membership in the Brainerd Lakes Area
Chambers of Commerce. Lisa Paxton
- Thank you so very much for taking the time out of your
meeting to let us show you a demonstration of our parliamentary
procedure skills. It was very interesting and neat to see how
yet another organizations uses parli pro in their own ways. We
also thank you for the wonderful food that you provided for us
from Bonanza and thanks for the wonderful newsletter article and
pictures. Magnus Nelson, Secretary Brainerd FFA

Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. Gary Walters is pictured second from the right in this group of new
members that gathered at the Sawmill Inn on Thursday, March 14th for
New Member Induction. Gary conducted the meeting and again was very
pleased with the new presentation format devised by Deb Ryan. Deb has
included a lot of the newly updated web page information (thanks Pam)
and photos that help new members understand Sertoma.
