Karen Owen is pictured with this year's Sertoman of the Year
Recipient "Big Mike Boen". Her tribute to Mike is presented
below. Mike himself talked about how inspiring it has been to be
involved in Sertoma. Mike moved to Brainerd in 1994 and as
co-owner/manager of the radio station WJJY immediately became
active in the community. His previous experience included being
Jesse Ventura's boss at KSTP in the early 1990's. Two national
radio awards are part of his management of WJJY-the Service to
American Parnership Award and the Crystal Award. He brought the
Child Abuse Radiothon with him. He believes strongly in this
cause and has generated community affections and support to the
tune of a growth in donations from $12,000 to $60,000. Mike and
his wife Pat are looking forward to a new grandson from son Nate
and daughter-in-law Amber very soon. Fishing is a major hobby
for Mike "the fixer". He has participated in muskie tournaments
for 20 years. One reason he enjoys his Woman Lake home is the
fact that he fishes sometimes from early morning until late
evening. He and his wife co-chaired the 2000-20001 United Way
Drive and rallied the community to exceed the original goal by
$30,000. Mike joined Sertoma when he canceled some Pipe and
Drape he ordered and became involved in set-ups and take-downs
as penance. As Club President he earned his gold coat award
helping to form the new Northern Lakes Sertoma Club. He started
the local Sertoma Week Promotion, organized and took part is
several fund raisers and has been active in all aspects of the
club including regional and international conventions. Mike
single handedly got our new sweatshirts and windshirts designed
and distributed. fas 829-7761 Greg Miller. Karen ended her
tribute
with the words, " From all that you have just heard, it is easy
to tell that Mike is a go-getter type of guy. He knows how to
get people involved and motivated while rolling up his sleeves
and leading by example. He is respected not only in our club but
also in the community and at work. We salute Mike as our 2001
Sertoman of the Year." |

Kevin Goedker was honored at today's meeting as Rookie of the
Year and he also accepted his GEM Award. Lori Redmond made the
presentation as last yearıs Rookie of the Year. Kevin received
this award as Lori said for his positive aggressive attitude
towards all the activities he has been involved in since joining
including: Vision Hearing Screening, Ditch Pick, Pipe and Drape,
Rookie Party, and Christmas Party. He is often seen at the door
greeting people and has taken many pictures for the community
page. fas 829-7761 Rick Cole Kevin joined Sertoma and won this
award because he values the lessons taught by his parents, "You
must give back to the community". |

In the spirit of cooperation, two very special visitors attended
the March 6th meeting of the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club. Everyone
welcome Roz Haapajoki and Cindy Meyer. The two ladies spoke about
the Sertoma Sunrise Liftathon going on March 7th and 8th
from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the High School Weight Room. This unique
fundraiser benefits student athlete programs at the school and
disadvantaged people in the community as well as providing
scholarships for worthy students. Last year they gave five
scholarships. Roz and Cindy received donations and pledges
amouting to $455. It is not too late to donate money, call Roz at
829-1861 if you missed today's meeting and would like to make a
donation. |

Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
