Pat Hassett-a nurse, a cancer survivor and the founder of a wonderful program for cancer patients and their families-was honored at today's Sertoma meeting as the recipient of the prestigious Service to Mankind Award. Seventeen years ago she began to work with cancer patients who needed information concerning their diagnosis and support in coping with their disease. She started the
"I Can Cope" program. In 1988 she trained for the
"Reach to Recovery" program for breast cancer survivors who help others who get the disease. Pat herself became a breast cancer survivor but continued her efforts to help others. These efforts will extend into our neighboring community of Crosby this spring and include a monthly newsletter. She was very active in organizing the first Relay for Life. With Pat's drive and a lot of dedicated volunteers, the
"Relay for Life" event raised over $130,000 this year and had more than 50 teams. She organizes and coordinates the Survivors Picnic and is active in the program which drives cancer patients to their appointments. She is currently working on a resource center that will soon become a reality and have videos, books, pamphlets and a computer for persons interested in gathering information about cancer. As Brian Skogen said in introducing her,
" Pat Hassett has truly provided Service to Mankind. In fact, she is the essence of the award."

End of the membership drive. Now is the time to scour the bushes for new members because they not only get to join a great club, but they get invited to a steak fry at Mike Boen's. (P.S. You can also bring them to the
"surprise" spring social which will be held that evening also.) The Social Committee has definitely decided to hold its Spring Mystery Fling in spite of
the conflict with Governor Ventura's visit. Those not visiting with the governor can reserve that date
for a night of Sertoma fun as organized by our great social committee.

Spring Social. Sign up sheets are going around next week where those who wish to participate on a
"Survival Team" will sign their contracts and those of us who wish to watch the fun will just indicate we are attending. Some pretty exciting events are being planned.
Social Hour at 6:00 p.m.--food, fun, beer, laughs, great times and a D.J.too! Anyone who did not register for the Survivor Social this week should do so by next week at the latest so that food can be
ordered. Call Todd Dunlap at 829-3156 to get your name on the list. Remember you can bring more than one guest especially if you are working on potential members. Cost is $7.00 per person.

Sertoman of the Day
|
|
|
|
It
was interesting to have a former college classmate of our illustrious president talk to us as Sertoman of the Day. John (Jack) Anderson is an attorney/personnel manager with Oak Ridge Homes. This organization administers group homes. Not only did Jack go to college with Mike Boen but he also attended the same high school as Jesse Ventura and Nancy Nelson, queen of the infomercials. He was married in 1974 and moved to Brainerd after his divorce in 1998. He has two twin girls. He hinted about an embarrassing moment that involved ordering meat loaf in the Vietnamese Restaurant but didn't go into details. He claims that his antics on the golf course got one guy to exclaim,
"You made golf a contact sport". FAS 829-7761 Kathy Bittner Lee. He joined Sertoma in August of 2000 and of course Mike was his sponsor.

Deb Ryan would like everyone to get information changes to her.
She will handle to updates to the national site and see that Steve Augustinack gets them for the local site.
David Pundt has tickets available for a Wine Tasting at the Country Inn to benefit animal charities.
Don't forget to try and "survive" with the gang at the Old Waterfall on March 31st.
Northern Lakes Sertoma Club is fully functional and going strong. Early April is their banquet; some members of the Noon Club should plan on attending for moral support.
Mike Boen introduced a new incentive to add to our growing list of reasons to find a new member. We each now own a black disposable shaver which must be brought to each meeting until 10 new members are signed up or you bring in a potential new member yourself. Those people who do bring in the members will get to shave Mike before FAS 829-7761 LoAnn Reponen. the Regional Convention May
3rd.
Tom Rosenberger has one more meeting to collect "Hoofing if for Haiti" money. He is presently about half way to his goal which includes money to buy the shoes WalMart is gathering up for the cause.
Mike Howard--Pipe and Drape begins....at Rohlfings. Set Up Friday March 23 at 5:30 p.m., Take Down Monday, March 26 at 6:00 p.m.

| Some issues have been raised concerning the Sertoma Sunshine efforts. As a
group we do want to acknowledge the good things that happen to the people in
our club and provide moral support when things are not so sunny. Mary
Marana, as one of the chaplains, has agree to be the coordinator of our
efforts. Her numbers are as follows; 828-4539 or
829-2997. Please contact her if you feel a card or flowers are appropriate. |
