Parents, grandparents, and even one of the school principals looked on with pride as the three winners of the National Heritage Essay Contest got up and read their winning selections.
Jeramie Torgerson Kaylee Lenk Kristin Couch
Jeramie Torgerson  Kaylee Lenk Kristin Couch

Jeramie Torgerson (Larry and Eyvonne Hall), Kaylee Lenk (Christy Link), and Kristin Couch (Ron & Jan Finger) will each receive a savings bond that is double the amount of last year thanks to the Liberty Bank, $200, $150, and $100 respectively. Jeramie and Kaylee both attend Riverside and Kristin is from Baxter School. The total number of contestants was 236. Jeramie spoke of two traditions in his family. His description of the mouth-watering treats his grandma bakes in the spirit of the season of doing for others made everyone hungry. His family also shares their Christmas with people less fortunate than they are. Camping and fish at Spirit Lake, Iowa, every June was definitely a favorite. Jeramie said, "It is like something I might see in the movies." He especially enjoyed the campfires , the scary stories and the chance to meet distant relatives who come from as far away as Colorado. Kaylee also told us about "Christmas at Uncle Bud's". We all laughed as she described the arrival of the traditional fake Santa with grocery sacks full of old books. Gary Walters, acting president, hastened to assure John Raboin that Santa is not a fake. She also talked about the family quilting tradition. Finally Kristin got up and told us about "Good Times With Dad". Her tongue and her tummy really like her family tradition because every Saturday her dad takes all the kids to breakfast and the stores to spend their allowance any way they would like. Kristin's parents will double the amount if they decide to put it in their college fund. She is definitely going to continue this with her family because "it teaches us to think about how we spend our money". Great job by a great bunch of kids.

March 31  End of the membership drive. Now is the time to scour the bushes for new members because they not only get to join a great club, but they get invited to a steak fry at Mike Boen's. (P.S. You can also bring them to the "surprise" spring social which will be held that evening also.) The Social Committee has definitely decided to hold its Spring Mystery Fling in spite of the conflict with Governor Ventura's visit. Those not visiting with the governor can reserve that date for a night of Sertoma fun as organized by our great social committee.
March 31 Come one come all to the Waterfall on Highway 371 to see if you can SURVIVE the Spring Social. Sign up sheets are going around next week where those who wish to participate on a "Survival Team" will sign their contracts and those of us who wish to watch the fun will just indicate we are attending. Some pretty exciting events are being planned.  Social Hour at 6:00 p.m.--food, fun, beer, laughs, great times and a D.J.too! Anyone who did not register for the Survivor Social this week should do so by next week at the latest so that food can be ordered.  Call Todd Dunlap at 829-3156 to get your name on the list. Remember you can bring more than one guest especially if you are working on potential members. Cost is $7.00 per person.

Sertoman of the Day

Sertoman of the Day, Chris KellettWe were so impressed with all the valuable things that today's Sertoman of the Day, Chris Kellett shared. She began by talking about her inspirational grandparents including Fred Kellett, one of Brainerd's most famous basketball coaches. She told us about her job at Lakeland Public TV, "I love my job, it is important to the community, and it allows me to learn all I can from the people I meet." She comes from a family of teachers and would like to be one some day. She has a son, 12 and two twin daughters who are 9. She grew up in the Cities and has had many many job experiences. She taught non-denominational church classes in her home, she has been in sales and waitressing, and she worked in Arizona at a Hazelton-type facility as a counselor. Her hobbies are "weird" because she studies philosophy in her spare time along with jogging. She is even writing several books one of which is a philosophy book for children. Kathy Christensen was her Sertoma sponsor. The quietness of her audience was an indication of an excellent speech.

"Hoofing for Haiti" had an exciting new announcement-WalMart will sell us 280 pair of shoes at a discount price of $5.91. Tom Rosenberger is collecting money not shoes--make checks payable to Tom, $10 from each of us would cover the cost.
Some issues have been raised concerning the Sertoma Sunshine efforts. As a group we do want to acknowledge the good things that happen to the people in our club and provide moral support when things are not so sunny. Mary Marana, as one of the chaplains, has agree to be the coordinator of our efforts. Her numbers are as follows; 828-4539 or 829-2997. Please contact her if you feel a card or flowers are appropriate. Sertoma Sunshine
