Bonnie Cumberland, the 2000 recipient of the Service to Mankind Award was the honored guest at today's meeting. Accepting her award, Bonnie gave a short but profound speech thanking a
"remarkable" organization for honoring her for something she feels she was placed on this earth to do. Her role models were her parents and her faith is based on a simple philosophy she found printed on a card,
"Look down and around and see what is wrong and then look up and make it better." In all her years of service as a teacher and public servant, she has certainly done all of those things. Bonnie was accompanied by her pastor and the Mayor of Brainerd.
The hard-working committee that nominated her included Bonnie Franke, George Moore, Reed Campbell, Chris Gross and Beth Burnard who introduced the candidate. Beth's presentation follows:
| Within the span of years which encompass a lifetime, one can only hope that one's collection of days have been spent in a manner that improves the quality of life for those with whom one has interacted. Since a lifetime today may easily be seventy or eighty years, this accomplishment plays out slowly. What then are we to think of a contemporary who has achieved this lofty status in less than half this time. In only thirty-two years Bonnie Cumberland, through her actions and selfless caring for others, has improved the quality of life for so many of us in the Brainerd Lakes Area. As a high school instructor in the Brainerd School District, Bonnie has inspired countless students to stretch beyond common boundaries to become successful contributors to Central Minnesota society. Award for her peers in education are numerous. Most notably, in 1987, Bonnie received the Minnesota Secondary Marketing Teacher of the Year award. As an active participant in life in the Brainerd Lakes Area, Bonnie served as Brainerd City C.C.. Ludwig Award from the League of Minnesota Cities. The Brainerd Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce recognized Bonnie as
"Outstanding Lay Person" in this area. She has served on more than nineteen boards and committees dedicated to the improvement of life in the Brainerd Lakes Area. She showed great courage in her battle against cancer that didn't keep her from fulfilling her civic duties for very long. Bonnie's gift is in the giving. Bonnie's message is that all God's children deserve the best quality of life possible. She will see a solution where others only see problems, unite the discordant, and give hope to the weary. She is a blessing to all of us in the Brainerd Lakes area. Bonnie Cumberland exemplifies all for which SERTOMA was founded. She is truly a most deserving recipient of this award. |

Sertoman of the Day
Milo Johnson, our illustrious president was this week's Sertoman of the day. He revealed some little known facts about his life including the fact that he literally traveled the world in his younger days selling magazines. He attributed his present company affiliation with Auto Value Stores directly to his participation in Sertoma-he met his future business partner at a meeting and eventually they became friends and decided to merge their businesses. As Milo said
"Sertoma networking really works". Another little known fact is that he grew up on a little farm near Gully, Minnesota, and married a Gully girl (his wife Linda) but only when he met her years later in California. His daughter , Shannon, is a senior and he has four grown children: Jon, David, Julie, and Lori. He joined the club in 1993 and his sponsor was Tom Swanson.
