Program
Sergeant LeRoy M. Ailts, a state trooper, was todays's presenter at Sertoma. He brought information about the 4th Annual Polar Bear Plunge March 7th which is sponsored by law enforcement groups and benefits Special Olympics. It is held at Breezy Point Resort. The event includes a costume contest that makes the Icy baths much more interesting. Last year's winning group was a set of penguins. He encouraged Sertoma to get a team together to participate or at least go to the Special Olympics website for Minnesota and donate online to the participants. One hundred ninety eight people have registered as of yesterday and that includes 29 teams. All fifty states have a Torch Run and Polar Plunges. Some places like Hawaii actually ice down a pool to participate. The event is extremely fun. Costume contest starts at noon and the event starts at 1 with a traveling trophy to the winning team. Contestants enter 34 degree water and then hit the hot tub. $733,000 has been raised so far with Minnesota plunges alone and there are three more besides this one to add to the total.. Donation is $75 per person. Around $64,000 was collected last year. Minnesota donated over a million dollars through this law enforcement sponsored activity and was one of seven states in the nation that went over that mark. 1981 was the beginning of Special Olympics. Money provides the athletes with travel money to attend events. "It is a wonderful program and benefits a very special group of people." Thanks Bonnie Cumberland for help with attendance and thanks Kathi Nagorski for taking pictures.
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes.

Notes from your President
We have been asked to participate in the March Food Share Campaign sponsored by the Salvation Army. The March campaign is very important since it determines the amount of funding allocated throughout the year to purchase more food for the shelf. Food and dollars donated stay in the community. Money donations work through the Second Harvest Food Bank and actually allows the Salvation Army to buy more food per dollar so monetary donations are welcome. The weakened economy has increased the demand for services and this is one way to help those struggling with these issues for the first time. If everyone brings one non-perishable food item to each of our March meetings, we can make a significant contribution to the cause.
