Service
To Mankind Award Winner Announced
The person chosen by the Noon Sertoma Club to
represent Service to Mankind in the community was
none other than Dick Endres, Founder of Confidence
Learning Center. Dick's many contributions to the
community besides his efforts at Camp make him the
epitome of the spirit of giving that makes the
United States of America a different place to live.
Dick himself explained that he started Confidence
Learning Center based on a faith that God wouldn't
let such a worthwhile effort fail.
His faith also
extended to the Brainerd Community. He felt that
Camp could be supported without state or federal funds
because people in this area are willing to give of
their time, talents, and money to help their fellow
man. Confidence Learning Center has brought
international recognition to the concept of what can
be accomplished with community support. The Service
to Mankind Award is given for lifetime achievement.
Dick was presented this award by Jeff Olson.
Executive Director at Confidence Learning Center.
Dick mentored Jeff when he first arrived at Camp
many years ago and Jeff reminded him of how many
boxes of awards and recognition plaques they had to
pack up when Dick retired and he moved into his
position.
The Sertoma Club gave Dick a standing
ovation since he is personally responsible for the
founding of the original Brainerd Club. After a year
of visiting all the Sertoma Clubs in the state, he
decided that this would be a great organization to
have locally. He was already very involved with the
Rotarians but assisted people like Charles Bartels
and Les Franz who are still currently members to
form that first club.
Dick was joined at the podium by his wife Jean after
he gave her much of the credit for his success. They
have been married for 55 years and raised 8 children
of their own and 12 foster children. The local
members of the family were also well represented to
see Dick receive his award.

interested in being on the committee. |

Notes from your President |
|
We have been asked to participate in the March Food Share
Campaign sponsored by the Salvation Army. The March campaign is
very important since it determines the amount of funding
allocated throughout the year to purchase more food for the
shelf. Food and dollars donated stay in the community. Money
donations work through the Second Harvest Food Bank and actually
allows the Salvation Army to buy more food per dollar so
monetary donations are welcome. The weakened economy has
increased the demand for services and this is one way to help
those struggling with these issues for the first time. If
everyone brings one non-perishable food item to each of our
March meetings, we can make a significant contribution to the
cause. |
