Jenni
Bailey, Camp Sertoma Director, gave everyone a chance to get the
glow of Service to Mankind today. She spoke on behalf of all of
the deaf and hard of hearing children who have benefited from the
Camp started by the Brainerd Noon Sertoma group in honor of Jon
Haappajoki. Jenni was overwhelmed by the size of the$6,000 check
presented at the Great Plains Regional Convention. She then read a
letter from a parent of one of the original campers. She portrayed
the mother as being very caring and overly protective of her hard
of hearing child to the point where she brought her to Camp the
first year and stayed to make sure that her daughter was happy.
Not only was the girl happy, but she felt for the first time in
her life that she was "normal". So many of these children are
unique in their home environments and their use of sign and
hearing aides makes them different from everyone else. Jenni
explained how amazing it is to see new campers immediately fit in
with everyone else and begin to build self esteem. There aren't
many opportunities around for hard-of-hearing children especially
to immerse themselves in a culture made up entirely of "their"
peers. Jenni invited everyone to spend an hour or two at Camp
Sertoma helping feed the troupes July 8-13th and July
15th-20th(this is a job dedicated to Sertoma and people from all
over the state participate). She did warn us that it was a very
addictive job and the kids would definitely have an impact on the
volunteers. Jenni was supported by Melissa Schaitberger from
Marketing and Special Events as well as Jeff Olson.
As a sidebar we had a visit from Nancy Cross from Community
Action. The Fourth of July fund drive (Brainerd is the Fourth of
July Capital of Minnesota) is a bit behind this year and she had a
few tricks up her sleeve to bring in a few donations. Check with
their web site for more information. Thanks to a very brave Diane
Rook Johnson who took notes today in spite of her horrible
hand-writing. She was reassured when Pam told her that 32 years of
teaching English allowed her to read anything) |

| Announcements |
| The Silent Auction has begun already.
Joyce Anderson and her cohort Veronica Jensen have brought
some of the more outstanding items and they are allowing
Sertomans to make early bids. Plan on attending the Mariucci
Fiesta just to get in on some of the spectacular bargains,
many of which were donated by Sertoma members. |
| Vacationland Benefit for Camp Sertoma,
June 16th 2-8 p.m. Features access to all Park features
including the NASCAR simulators for two hours at the price of
$15. Mike Boen is looking for some volunteers to be the voice
on the ads that will run starting Sunday. Call 828-1244 to
become a radio star. Call Vacationland and ask for Donna or
Nancy to volunteer to help supervise on that Saturday if you
aren't fishing in the Camp Confidence Classic. The Camp
Sertoma fundraiser at Vacationland is scheduled for Saturday,
June 16th from 2-8 pm. We could use Sertoma volunteers to be
checking arm bands for time expiration. The offer will be
$15.00 for two hours of unlimited park use. Anyone who can
volunteer should check in at the NASCAR building. Volunteers
do not need to work the entire time. Any time will help.
Thanks. |

Schedule |
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you

| Sertoman of the Day |
A
very hard-working new-old Sertoman got up today and presented her
many involvements in our club. Lori Rubin originally joined the
Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club and was sponsored by Paul Gropper. Her
job moved her out of town so she transferred to the St. Cloud
branch for a while and then came back in time to be part of last
year's stellar rookie class. This time Tami was her sponsor. Her
list of achievements far surpasses most rookies: gossamer ceiling,
pipe and drape, rookie party, head of sales for the Winter
Wonderland, chairman of the committee for speakers and
entertainment at Great in 08, and marketing for the 07 convention.
Lori is a busy Mom with four kids, Tanner is just starting to
walk. She is an outdoor girl who was raised in the Cass Lake area.
She began her work in telecommunications at Infotel and currently
works for Consolidated Telecommunications Company. The company has
offices in Baxter and Brainerd with over 60 employees offering
local and long distance telphone, high speed Internet, television
services, VOIP telephone, web hosting and IT services. Her roll is
account executive. Lori got a chance to explain how she ended up a
"criminal" because her dog bit another dog. The whole story made
us feel there is something wrong with a justice system that
punishes hard-working honest citizens for an animal complaint that
did not even affect human beings. Pam took two pictures of this
very photogenic lady and this one is much better than the "sad"
face. |
