Program
Reed Campbell took off his Sertoma and banker's hats today and stood before us as a member of the Brainerd School Board. He brought with him fellow Board Member Bob Nystrom and Director of Business Services Stephen Dickinson. Both Reed and Bob are 1975 graduates of Brainerd High School and are very active Board Members. Reed addressed the issues which are facing the District in terms of financial shortfalls. Currently Brainerd School continues to enjoy an excellent reputation throughout the state and even nationally. However, along with other schools in Minnesota their quality programs are going by the wayside because of budget cuts. Governor Ventura changed the way schools are funded and the current method along with the recession that followed his term has finally taken its toll on the local situation. The School District has spent it's cushion and cut five millions dollars in programs and teachers so far. They are facing many new mandated programs that do not come with a lot of dollars attached. Reed remarked, "Either we have a referendum to offset this imbalance or we will be forced to cut 5 million dollars in one year." That would amount to 70 teachers. Enrollment is expected to be the same or to grow slightly from the current 7,150 students. Our school is compared to many richer districts but is currently very low on the totem pole when it comes to local funding options. We rank 28th in enrollment and 86th in average local money spent per student. School finance is a very complex issue. Both Reed and Bob reiterated that even though 75 percent of the citizens in the 750 square miles that encompasses the Brainerd School District do not have children in schools, they have a definite stake in the quality of education. Bob added, "The Brainerd School District is part of the fabric of the community. Quality people move to Brainerd because of the quality of our schools." The School District contributes 98 million dollars to the economy and anything that impacts that figure will trickle down to everyone. All three of these individuals encouraged us to support the school system and a referendum if it is presented to the taxpayers. As a former educator, I appreciate the fact that the Brainerd School District does not attempt to sugar coat issues and appeals to the citizens to help them solve their problems. Everyone needs to be concerned about the future of our community.
Thanks Pam Bye from the Chapparal and TimberMist for taking notes.
Announcements
All the Sertoma members who participated in the preparations for the Mariucci Fiesta and/or put up flags for Flag Day, and/or helped with the Camp Sertoma Fundraiser on Saturday deserve to be recognized for outstanding Service to Mankind. Many thanks to all especially from Julia Sullivan and from Jeff Olson from Confidence Learning Center. Julia remarked, "You are all awesome, the day went so smoothly." Jeff added, "Financially this was the most successful and the biggest Classic yet." Joyce Anderson thanked her cohort Veronica Jensen and then shared the fact that the 2007 auction total is twice what it was in 2005 at $7,614. The Live Auction brought in $12,165 which makes the grand total $19,779. Awesome!!! Click to see a photo collage of the event.
The Board Meeting was held last week and the minutes will be in your email. The biggest news is the fact that Joe Schulte and Rory Coit have arranged to visit five different Sertoma district conventions to promote Great in 08. They will be visiting Orlando, Fort Dodge, Sioux Falls, Minneapolis and Nebraska.

Sertoman of the Day
Mary Marana worked at KLKS for 18 years and then decided she needed more stress in her life so she became Director of the Crisis Line. She is their only full time employee and directs operations. Mary came to Sertoma way back in 1994 and her sponsor was Lynn Franz. She explained that she has made many dear friends through Sertoma as well as helping out the community in things like the flag project, pipe and drape, bell ringing, and others. Her family includes a grown daughter and son and she is a single parent. Mary likes to visit warm spots like the Carribean where she can wear her bathing suit as much as she likes and drink pina coladas under a beach umbrella. She likes Minnesota hobbies like fishing but she would rather just go out in the middle of the lake and read her book while pretending to cast. She is also an avid gardener. Her most embarrassing moment involved admiring male bodies much in the manner of the Diet Pepsi (correction by Bryan Jelinski) commercial. Her admiration of the workout room at the Crosby Community Center allowed her to smack right into a decorative column.
Of Note
Director Emeritus Dick Endres and Executive Director Jeff Olson presented the Everett Lassig Award to Sertoma member and General Manager of BL Broadcasting, Mike Boen. WJJY was one of ten radio stations in the country presented with the prestigious NAB Crystal Radio Award for Community Service. Two of the significant efforts that made WJJY stand out are the blood drives and radiothons for child abuse. Confidence Learning Center is very grateful for all of Mike's efforts that support CLC throughout the year. His donation of radio time to promote both The Classic and the Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza goes a long way to making those events successful. His continued membership in two Sertoma clubs makes him a staunch supporter of CLC in other ways. In fact, Mike had to leave his Sertoma Mariucci duties to come up on stage to receive his award.
Rumor Corner
  • Gosh Pam Bye took notes and Mary was Sertoman of the Day and they behaved themselves!!
  • Bob Nibbe won some money today and got a lot of free publicity from Dave Clausen for Boys-n-Berries. They are doing splendidly and are out of fruit til Friday.
  • Brett got fined for the toilet bowl joke.
  • Lori Rubin is auctioning off her dog--she was the first volunteer to contribute to next year's Fiesta auction. Joyce was serious however, she wants to start collecting right now!!
  • Chuck Brenny was assaulting young ladies at the Fiesta--he paid a happy fine!
  • Happy 29th B-Day Kathi Nagorski.
  • Some YMCA lady got a dig into all the insurance guys today, but she paid for it!!
  • Terry Curtis found out it doesn't pay to be the paving go to guy for a Sergeant.
  • Again many thanks to all the Sertomans who participated in the Classic as well as those who helped with the Fiesta. Camp Confidence is proud to acknowledge the large contribution Sertoma makes each year to their continued success.
