The crew for the 6th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for Life event
planned for July 2nd at Adamson Field joined the Brainerd Noon
Sertoma Club for lunch today. They shared a video about the
beginnings of the Komen Foundation that was established in 1982 by
Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister who died of breast
cancer at the age of 36.All of us are aware of the problems
facing breast cancer victims since Lynn Franz is currently in our
prayers because of her battle with this disease. Christie
Jelinkski who is Brian’s wife is co chair of the event. She talked
about the fact that 75% of the money raised stays in the community
and 25% goes to research. Local monies are handed out in the form
of grants.
Emily Lanin, who is the chairperson, went on to explain that
they are very proud of the money that provided mammography for
resident of Cass County with the purchase of a used machine for
use by the Dakota Clinic this past year. Many local sponsors are
involved including The Power Loon, Brainerd Medical Center, Cuyuna
Medical Center, Cub Foods, and Radco to mention a few.
Volunteer Coordinator Sue Fisher, shared some of the special
parts of this event. They include a quilt raffle, the Pink
Survivor Tent which is new this year, Shop for the Cure, and
Tinkled Pink. This unique contest involves decorating a porta
potty with dollar votes for the champion that will go into the
fund. This year they are expecting 1,600 participants including 87
survivors—you can find out more information at

| Gary Walters Update - The walk will
take a bit longer than planned for and John Raboin put out the
call for drivers for the RV for the extra days. Gary is
plugging away and very uncomfortable. They hope to reach the
Canadian border soon. His youngest daughter had to drop out of
the walk, but the other three children are going strong.
Donations and mentors are not coming in as fast as last year
when Gary was visible to everyone so encourage people to
participate in this fund raising activity. |

Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job

| Sertoman of
the Day |
Kathy
Williams moving story proves the value of our Sertoman of the Day
Program. All of us know Kathy, but many of us were unaware of her
personal history and her high level of involvement in Sertoma.
Kathy has three children, two from her previous marriage and a
stepson with her new husband, Steve. She was very excited to share
the fact that her son has been accepted into graduate school.
Kathy came to Brainerd from Northfield where she was very
active in Sertoma. The Northfield club was the fist to charter
with women members. Kathy held all the offices in her home club as
well as being the first woman elected to an international office.
She served on the Board of the Foundation and became the VP
traveling the country working for the Foundation. She started
working at an early age for her father and spent 20 years in the
ad management position for newspaper, radio and TV stations in
Northfield. The Chamber of Commerce in Brainerd employed her for 7
years until she took a position at Lakeland Public Television
which ended because of budget cuts. Kathy, however, had been
working part time for Newton Advertising and decided to make this
her full-time job. Newton has about one thousand representatives
all over the country who sell specialty items such as pens and
calculators with business logos for advertising.
Kathy enjoys calligraphy, gardening, garage sales, treasure
hunting at antique stores, cooking and crossword puzzles. Before
sharing her most embarrassing moment which was hilarious, Kathy
told us about her personal brush with death from a car accident
that left her in a wheel chair for a year and broke almost every
bone in her body. As Rory stated afterwards, “As Sertoman of the
Day you can share your triumphs and your sadness and know that
Sertomans care.”
Kathy was Miss Fridley and won the swimsuit competition in the
Miss Minnesota contest. She explained that she won not because of
her swimsuit display but because everyone felt sorry for the
contestant who hooked one of the cloud decorations on the stage
with her spike heels and dragged it along on her walk down the
ramp. Thanks Kathy for sharing your story. See Sandra Bonde to
sign up! |

Of
Note |
|
|
|
Thanks to the rodeo volunteers, especially Kari Robinson. The
effort raised $455. Do not forget to fill out your volunteer slip
for these activities. |
|
|
|
We have many volunteer opportunities before us at this time and we
need everyone to dig deep to find the time to help out. If you
cannot put up flags, volunteer to take notes during a meeting. If
Pipe and Drape or the Gossamer Ceiling is too difficult for you
physically, volunteer to chop onions or make breadsticks at the
Mariucci Fiesta. Speaking personally, I spend many hours each
month putting together our award winning newsletter as well as
working on the data base. I can’t continue unless YOU are willing
to take a small part of the responsibility and volunteer to take
notes at a meeting. The form is very self-explanatory and I will
gladly answer any questions. I simply cannot take pictures and
keep track of other details during the meeting if I have to take
notes. |
