If you did not attend Sertoma today, you missed a splendid
opportunity to hear someone who has made Confidence Learning
Center his life’s work talk about Sertoma’s involvement. Bob
Slaybaugh came to Camp Confidence as an intern fifteen year’s
ago and never left.
Through the help and the support of the
community including major efforts from the Noon Sertoma Club, he
has seen it grow to become one of the biggest facilities of its
kind in the nation even though it still remains the one with the
lowest cost. That is made possible by thousands of volunteer
hours and by the unique partnership that Confidence Learning
Center creates with their clients. This is the reason for the
change in name—Confidence Learning Center makes caregivers
(parents and direct care staff) partners in giving the person
with a developmental disability the opportunity for an outdoor
learning adventure. Bob remarked, “We focus on the abilities our
clients have and what they can do, not what they can’t do.” Not
only do the clients go home with new experiences, but their
caregivers go home with new ideas of what their charges can
accomplish.
New programs at Confidence include our very own Camp Sertoma, spring visits from 1200 school children, and the
Fishing Has No Boundaries Program. Bob ended his speech by
asking the audience to hold their applause since he intended to
applaud Sertoma in thanks for all that the club has done for a
grateful “Camp”. Bob is pictured working with a group of
Franklin Volunteers. |

Schedule |
|
Remember: Greeters
(Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people
at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided
with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the
social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties.
You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to
greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket
if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided
by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

Sertoman of the Day
|
Sarah Nelson, one of our newer members who admits she hasn’t
made it to an induction yet, was our Sertoman of the Day. Sarah
works at Brainerd Medical Center in the Audiology Department
which she now handles on her own. She does hearing evaluations
on patients from birth through geriatric, fits and sells hearing
aids, and also works with industrial hearing screenings. She has
been there just over a year. Sarah was born in Brainerd and
originally planned to be away from her hometown but after a
brief try, decided to return. College was Moorhead and Stevens
Point. She is presently unattached. She enjoys golf,
rollerblading, volleyball, and shopping. In fact, she is
training for the Grandma’s Rollerblading Marathon in Duluth and
hopes to survive without any broken bones. She was brought to
Sertoma by Dennis Renowski and joined because Sertoma works with
the hearing impaired. She also believes in community service.
She is looking for a committee to join. |

Of Note: |
|
|
|
Julia Sullivan took a moment to encourage all the rookies to
become involved in Sertoma—as Julia says and did—don’t be shy,
just jump up and volunteer. |
|
|
|
Our prayers go with Diane Ulman’s new grandson Mason who is in
Children’s Hospital. |
|
|
|
Thanks to the Sertoma from the Grad Blast. |

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.
