Choo-Choo,
Chug Chug Chug, “The Rhythm of the Rails” was rolling along
today at Sertoma. Jody Crowe, Executive Director and founder of
the group was our guest speaker. Jody and his wife moved to
Brainerd from Grand Rapids where he has worked on the Showboat
there for many years. His vision to start the Rhythm of the
Rails was centered around the historically significant part that
the railroad played in Brainerd’s history. He put together the
Harmony Engineers Quartet and the first performance was the Crow
Wing County Centennial Fair in 1997.
The summer outdoor vaudeville show has its roots in downtown
Brainerd. Their set includes replicas of turn of the century
Brainerd storefronts. Their major concern lately has been coming
up with a new location. There was some talk of moving either to
This Old Farm or BIR, but the group is making serious progress
on a permanent location. The area across from th e Franklin
School which is in the process of being converted to an Arts
Center would give them a 1,000 seat outdoor amphitheater, the
chance to construct a permanent indoor facility for dinner
shows, and enough area to contain an amusement park. At present
the project is in the planning stage, but Jody is hopeful that
this will work since the railroad has tentatively agreed to
donate the land.
Their temporary location is the Northern Pacific Center for
this summer’s shows. Plans for the new location include a yearly
re-enactment of the 1933 Baby Face Nelson Bank Robbery in
downtown Brainerd to generate money for projects. Plans are also
being made to incorporate KARE 11’s Casey Jones as the Icon for
the theme park. Their off season radio shows will continue and
part of the plans for the permanent location include Train to
Santa at Christmas time. Jody took the time to thank some of our
members who have been very helpful to the program including
Bonnie Cumberland, Anderson Brothers and Lakes Printing. |

Remember: Greeters
(Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people
at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided
with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the
social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties.
You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to
greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket
if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided
by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you

Sertoman of the Day
|
Jerry
Keimig from Minuteman Press was our honored Sertoman. Jerry was
brought into Sertoma by Tami Webb. He comes into the printing
business from 25 years with 3M. He has four children and two
grand children. Minuteman Press is a franchise with 950
locations World Wide. It is a full service print center and his
branch is located on West Washington Street. After explaining
that he had been all over the world with 3M, he gave the members
of Sertoma a fine compliment when he said, “The Professionalism
of the businessmen here is tops!” Jerry and his wife Sue have
been married for 8 years. His hobbies include woodturning where
he says, “I specialize in turning exotic woods into sawdust.”
The question that got him into Sertoma was, “How do you separate
community and business?” Since this is impossible to answer, it
certainly explains why all of us are active Sertoma members.
Thanks for sharing your expertise with us, Jerry. He didn't have
an embarrassing moment to share with us but he did get a few
have a few humorous things to say about his rivals Rory Coit and
Paul Gropper. |
|
|
|
Of Note: |
Julia
Sullivan was the recipient of two awards today. She received her
GEM Award. Rookies, Julia jumped right into activities at Sertoma
and earned her Good Enthusiastic Member Award and you can too. In
fact, she jumped in so far that all of her fellow rookies elected
her to be their Rookie of the Year. Congratulations to someone who
is well deserving of this honor. |
|
|
Erica
Ruen, Nikki Phillips and Maria Swanson were Bonnie Cumberland’s
guests today. These three worthy recipients were the first high
school students to receive Sertoma Scholarships from the newly
established Scholarship Fund. Erica, pictured on the left, will
attend Northwestern College in St. Paul and plans on fulfilling a
lifelong dream to become an elementary teacher. Nikki Phillips,
who is the daughter of our very own Wilfred Brumley—Randy
Phillips, plans to attend St. Olaf in Northfield with a pre-med
focus. On the right, Maria Swanson has not decided on a major, but
she will be attending the University of Minnesota in Duluth.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.
