Joe BrennyJoe Brenny spoke to the group about a topic that is very close to his heart today. Camp Amanda is a new endeavor by the Minnesota Funeral Director's Association to prepare children for dealing with the death of someone close to them. The Association has established the Minnesota Foundation for Children which has organized and financed several grief camps in Minnesota based on the model established in Iowa. Camp Amanda Minnesota's goal is to bring hope to Minnesota's grieving children. It's two major outcomes which they strive to achieve in each weekend camping session are to help children ranging in age from five to eighteen confront the reality of death and also trigger the grieving process so that they can move on with their lives. The children are sponsored at camp by a local funeral director. They arrive on Saturday morning and leave Sunday afternoon. Responsible adults join in the activities on Sunday. A medical doctor is part of the process giving the children time to ask questions about the nature of the loved one's illness or death. Oftentimes children believe they are responsible for this event and speaking to a doctor will clarify this mistaken idea. Mr. Brenny said, The reality of death does not set in for about 6 months, it takes two to five years for recovery, and parents who have lost a child in the 16-22 year old bracket never recover from the loss. The counselors are companions on the journey to discover and deal with grief. Art is used to deal with death and dying and help the children communicate their thoughts. A candlelight ceremony on Saturday night is a moving and healing part of the weekend when each child lights a candle and shares a memory. Another symbolic act is the release of balloons at the end of camp to signify letting go. Each child takes home Amanda who is a lovable stuffed panda bear. Joe asked us for two things as Sertomans. We need to be ambassadors who go out and spread the word about these camps. We also can volunteer so that more of them can be offered to accommodate the huge waiting list that has already developed even though the program is only two years old. They are also looking for additional sponsors for the foundation since the cost for each child is about $663.

Greeter Schedule
Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Patty Hartman.

Notes
  • Many thanks from Chuck Bartels and Jeff Olson for the Outstanding Mariucci Fiesta. We served about a thousand people and everything was well organized and went smoothly. Booster Tickets this year were over the $12,000 mark with many being sold that evening. The Fiesta itself raised $20,000 and the total was $85,123. Golf was full and fishing had a record 90 some boats. View the Mariucci Photo Album.
  • Gary called from Clarksdale, Mississippi. It was hot and muggy and he was complaining that it had rained every day. He said, "Most of the local have teeth". He has ridden 400 miles in 5 days with 112 being his longest ride so far.
  • Dave Clausen spoke about Gary's trip and his commitment to Kinship Partners. The consortium that won the ticket money donated it to Gary's Kinship Fund. More details at the next meeting

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
