Kelly WatercottKelly Watercott, the new director of the Volunteer Network has an invitation for all Sertomans that Gary Walters would like to encourage us to accept. One of her duties in her new job which she started January 3rd was to plan Volunteer Day which will be held on July 10th at Brainerd High School. Gary would like to see 50-80 Sertomans turn out for the luncheon paid for by the club which will be held from 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. with special guest speaker Dr. James Gambone. Dr. Gambone is an internationally recognized resource on intergenerational relationships who has written two books and produced several films. All of us should certainly be interested in hearing about “refirement” rather than “retirement”. Kelly shared her duties which include coordinating jobs for volunteers like Sertomans, and generally working to make these relationships work smoothly. She encouraged those of us who make use of volunteers to consider nominating them to be featured on her monthly television program on Lakeland Public Television or to be the recognized volunteer in the Brainerd Daily Dispatch column that comes out in the middle of each month listing volunteer jobs and celebrating those who have contributed to the Brainerd Lakes efforts. She talked about Martin Luther King Day and the Spring Fling Boogie that brought together seniors and kids to learn old time dancing. She told us that President Bush’s goal for volunteerism is 4 hours a week which would amount to 4,000 hours in 20 years. She is also coordinating the Opportunities Fair, which will present job opportunities at Mississippi Horizons on Tuesday, July 23, from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. Her long range goals for her program which is currently funded by a grant is to have an actual volunteer center. She also had a very significant quote, “The best way to motivate people to volunteer is to ASK. This brought Mike Howard fas 829-7761 Rod Converse to his feet again, to ask that people sign up for the Saturday takedown of the quilters show.

Notes
Thank you’s were flying through the air at Sertoma today. Chuck Bartels got up to say how overwhelming the response was from Sertomans on Friday to help with the Mariucci Fiesta. He gave special kudos to those wonderful Jeff OlsonSt. John’s kids who were willing to pitch in on Thursday and make breadsticks. Jeff Olson also got up to thank everyone. He apologized for the poison ivy trail from his house to the lodge. He is certain the fund raiser has topped the $70,000 goal which is very good news since this is a very lean year for Camp. He was pleasantly surprised to have Lori Redmond who is chair of the sponsorship committee hand him an additional check for $3000 to help with the shortfall. If you want to see the pictures fas 829-7761 Jinny Haugen from the Mariucci Fiesta as well as the golf and fishing tournaments they are at http://community.webshots.com/user/campconfidence.
Jenny Bailey was a special guest today to give us an update on Camp Sertoma which starts next Sunday. She is very excited about the international group of counselors she has gathered including one from Russia and one from Sweden. She encouraged Sertomans to come out and visit especially on the Saturday when the open house will see many of the speaking parents of deaf children finding out what goes on at camp. She is also still looking for volunteers for food service, fishing
Your prayers and thoughts should be with Lynn Franz who is back in the hospital with an infection after her recent knee surgery.
DETAILS ABOUT THE SERTOMA GOLF TOURNAMENT
Dave Burggraff introduced Jenny Bailey and explained that Camp Sertoma is still short funds to pay for this year’s camp and hopes to make up the deficit at the first Camp Sertoma Golf Tournament held at the Vintage Golf Course in Staples MN (218-894-9907) It will include pre-golfing games at 10:30, shotgun start at noon with 4 player teams and best fall format and a grilled turkey dinner after golfing around 6:00 p.m. Trophies, $2,000 in prizes and door prizes will be awarded. Cost is $100 per individual golfer with corporate sponsors for teams and holes encouraged.
Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
