These two smiling guys shared the podium at the meeting today
wearing their “colors”. Each was wearing a shirt from the
Classic--Camp Confidence’s annual fund raiser. They represent
the long association that Sertoma has had with Camp Confidence
and this event. Jeff Olson, Executive Director, spoke first. He
recounted his first visit to Camp Confidence in 1978 a place he
had heard about and very much wanted to see. Jeff walked in to
the middle of the Mariucci Fiesta and wound up washing dishes.
The two people he met that night that would have a profound
effect on his future were Charles Bartels and Bob Ehrich. The
Sertomans had been helping with the Fiesta long before Jeff
arrived on the scene officially in 1986. He recalled that he
called Bob Ehrich, “Vegetable Bob” for the first year he knew
him, simply because that has been Bob’s Fiesta job
forever--preparing the delicious deep-fried vegetables. Both
Jeff and Charlie pointed out Pam Sachs as a prime example of how
the Mariucci Fiesta has affected members. Pam was brought to
Camp by Jeff as a volunteer and she participated as an honorary Sertoma cook for many years before retiring and becoming a
member. Jeff went on to share the fact that Camp is in one of
its lean periods. Camp usage is breaking all records and unlike
a business these means more expenses not more revenue. Donations
are down because people think the Jaycees tremendous
contribution which is the largest single cash donation each year
to Camp covers everything. One of the other problems is the
United Way reduction of 46%. Jeff called Charlie the “captain”
of the Fiesta. He went on to recognize Milo Johnson who every
year lines up the food donations, Scott Fisher who gets all the
liquor and other drinks donated by the liquor companies, and
Paul Gropper and Tami Webb for working with the volunteers.
Everyone is hoping for a big turnout of volunteers this year
because this could be one of the largest group of people served.
Both the fishing and the golf are sold out. The main reason is
the proximity of the golf at Cragun’s where they will be
shuttling people to camp immediately afterwards. Charlie assured
us that a more organized “rain” plan fas 829-7761 Kari Robinson
will be in effect. Even if you cannot organize your day to work
preparing food or serving, both Jeff and Charlie stressed the
fact that all “friends of camp” are invited to share in the
festivities. Anyone who is a Sertoman fits into that category.
All new members should certainly try to attend and join the
“fun”. The Silent Auction items this year promise to be
plentiful and unique thanks to those Sertomans who have been
working on this committee, well worth the trip by themselves.
Needed more outdoor gas cookers for Friday. |

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |
