Dave Falkey, Assistant Director Crow Wing County Emergency Services, was our speaker today. In the aftermath of the tornado that struck Brainerd following a 21/2 mile path, his information was timely and important. He informed us that anyone with tornado damage needs to call (800) 462 9029 to register for individual assistance. The President may declare our area a disaster area and the funds that come in will only be earmarked for public utilities, roads, etc. unless enough people have sustained enough damage to qualify for individual assistance. People calling the number will be told that they are not eligible but their names will be put in a holding file in case funding does arrive. The Red Cross has been very active in helping people clean up and anyone wanting to volunteer should certainly get in touch with them. One interesting thing Dave noted was the lack of sirens. This was due to the fact that the power outage occurred just when the sirens were about to sound the alarm. He talked about the need for the NOAH radio system and the fact that it was supposed to be installed for this season. Major stumbling blocks include people who do not want the towers in their area. He also told us about the function of local spotters in tornado warnings.

Mike Howard and Camp Sertoma Club are looking for volunteers to work at Valley Fair. This could turn into a yearly event and could raise a lot of money for the Camp Sertoma operating fund. Right now they are
looking for 16-20 club members to work from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The jobs will be assigned when you get there and could include anything from selling
tickets to picking up garbage. The sheet will be going around the meetings. This could be a chance for a family outing with you working and the kids
paying and playing.
