Program
The speaker today was Sarah Hayden from the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance located in Pine River. This is a non-profit group that works with Solar Energy. Their goal is to make this renewable source of energy available to people of all income levels. They are actually now involved in OEM manufacturing that has provided green jobs for the Pine River area as well as producing a better product for their mission. Fuel poverty is a big problem in northern Minnesota because of our climate. The definition is--families are in fuel poverty if they have to choose between staying warm and other necessities of life. Solar heating systems are installed on a case by case basis for these families. It offsets about 30% of the heating bill per year. It helps these families in a numbetr of different ways such as providing heat and clean energy, and encouraging self-sufficiency which saves fuel assistance money. The systems are provided through fund-raising. Their mission is to complete 36 homes in the area in a two year period. They have been helping families since 2,000. The Real SPF (Solar Powered Furnace) is the name of their device which is patented and was developed by their team. Most devices are solar electric. Their technology is the simplest--it heats conditioned air from the home. It costs $5000 rather than $20,000 initially. They have a youth outreach program to spread the word about solar energy It targets at risk youth. They have an open market program to install other solar energy units including electric and water heat. The profits go back into the SPF program. There were many questions from interested Sertomans.
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes, Bonnie Cumberland for taking attendance and Kari Satre for taking pictures.

Sertoman of the Day
Financial Group of Central Minnesota is owned by Diane Rook-Johnson and her husband Buford and their personal a business partnership is a huge success. She does everything at their full service business. Their offices are in Baxter and includes four reps and one staff person. They do a lot of non-traditional types of investment. Many of their programs require accreditation. She stressed the fact that they look at the entire picture for their investors. The business has been in place for 30 years. Buford and Diane met at an Insurance Seminar and joined forces for business as well marriage. She just turned the big 60 (for the second time since she was confused last year and thought she was 60). They have seven children and 8 grand children, and two great grand children, spread throughout the country. She grew up in a rural area and until age eleven lived with some pretty primitive conditions. She has been self-employed for as long as she remembered. Diane refers to her embarrassing moments as open mouth and insert two feet. Her favorite is "When is the baby due?" and then realizing it is not baby time. Her hobbies include travel, working in her yard and spending time at the lake. As a former toastmaster she decided to make the end of her speech a bit of etiquette lessons. She stressed that God comes before country--we should be praying then saying the pledge. She also wanted us to eliminate the pause between "one nation under God" in the pledge. She could not remember her sponsor but she did serve as treasurer for a year. She is active in gossamer, pipe and drape and heads up a flag team (the absolute best one of course).

Rumor Corner
  • Everyone wondered if Grandma Mary was going to make it!! She did complete with pictures. Milo arrived yesterday.
  • Gerry Peterson greeted Sandra Ehrich at the door with "It is about time you got here, people are talking about you." Hmm inquiring minds want to know the rest of the story.
  • Greg Straka called Katie today and made sure she wasn't coming so he could be at Sertoma. He got even by fining Dale Bolt who started this whole rumor about him and Katie.
  • Kathy Williams was the fireman today--she was running around putting them out before Sertoma and wasn't sure she was going to make it.
  • Charley introduced himself correctly today--Wow!
  • David Allen Pundt and Gary Walters are running for governor.
  • Dahlia roots from uncle Art-thanks.
  • Sertowoman of the day was not wearing her fabric swatches today
  • Boysenberry shirt--Mike Boen. Actually successful guys wear pink--Pam Sachs had to pay a happy fine because one of her Knowledge Bowl students (3rd in State in PINK shirts) was on C Span Monday as the VP of the Washington Press Club and MC of the Gerald Ford Media Awards introducing people like former VP Dick Cheney and President Ford's son.
  • Greg fined Kristine for being too happy and Rick B for being grumpy.
  • Bryan Barrer was explaining how to spell his name-think flipper!
  • Carole Winegar got fined for being out of uniform.
  • Chris Gross got married and didn't tell Greg Straka so he got fined.
  • Tina takes fat pictures of Greg Straka.
  • Joyce Frid had to pay $2 for her husband retiring
  • Mr.Boen decided the order should be dessert with the dog pound before prayer and pledge.
  • Sandy Fowler got fined for grabbing the unit from the Dog Pound Table.
  • All the old folks back in the corner got fined for eating at the kids table.
  • Brenda got a fine for delivering--pork that is.
  • Golf team for the Classic will be Paul Gropper, Joe Schulte (Turner and Hooch) Tom Rosenbrger, Jim Mayne, Todd Alguire. Alas you can't put your brother on the team as Pam Sachs found out!
  • Amie Anderson is not wearing a shirt but she is helping at the Mariucci Fiesta--will it be totally without a shirt? Sounds kinky!
  • Pictures of our lameduck president in drag were circulating among the masses today. Mr. Korte denies being the person in the picture.
