Win Borden who billed himself as a farmer and an author was today's speaker. He also mentioned his past experiences as a lawyer, politician and incarcerated tax evader. He began by thanking Sertoma for its involvement in the community, mentioning specifically the promotion of the Arboretum and Camp Confidence. His humorous but solid message which is presented in his book "Ruminations" contains a guidebook for successful living especially for seniors. His 8 lessons of life were:
Live in today and enjoy life.
Learn from mistakes and endure.
Open your box of dreams often and rejuvenate it.
Take an inventory daily.
Less is often more.
Be friendly with your mental companions.
Remember the kids.
We are not perfect.

The book which sells for $10.50 was available for sale after the meeting. Win is currently writing another book and also encouraged everyone to patronize the local farm markets.

Rory Coit presented the wrap-up of the Sertoma State Regional Convention. His presentation can be accessed by clicking here. Rory ended his speech with a heartfelt acknowledgement of all the help he was given. He was overwhelmed by the compliments of the attendees from other clubs.

Thanks David Allen Pundt for taking notes!

Announcements
Congratulations to Chris Dens who was the scholarship winner who attended today's noon meeting. The other two $500 Scholarships went to: Sarah Pfingsten and Tyler Rose who weren't at the meeting. Chris plans on attending the University of Minnesota to obtain a degree in bio-medical engineering. President Korte gave him his first Sertoma job-collecting fines and encouraged him to come back when he finishes school and consider joining our organization.
CALLING ALL SERTOMA MARIUCCI AUCTION HELPERS--Veronica Jensen and Joyce Anderson have just 10 days left to make this the biggest and best auction ever. Consider donating something unique from your business that will draw attention to it while it raises money for program. They would also appreciate your help in contacting your neighbors and business associates with this opportunity! The WII was a great idea but we need more!
If you would like to help with the Gossamer call Paul Heinlen.

Sertoman of the Day
David Downing shared his story today as Sertoman of the Day. David is the head of Kinship Partners and has worked closely with Sertoma and Gary Walters in his efforts to promote mentoring in the Brainerd Lakes Area. He last spoke to the group when he was organizing the 100 mentors in 100 days effort which succeeded. The attention did bring many new children into the program so there is still a great need for Kinship partners. David has an older and younger set of children and the fact that the older set resided in Minnesota brought him back to the area from Florida. This is his first job that has not been faith based. He took it because he wanted to be directly involved in helping the community in a project where the results were more visible. David's enthusiasm for his work is very evident. His most embarrassing moment involved a family trip (he's an Okie from Muskogee) where he threw up all over the maintenance guy who happened to be occupying the stall he made it to when he started feeling nauseated.
Of Note
We received three thank you notes today. CLC acknowledged our participation in their scholarship programs. The Brainerd School District thanked us for helping the Music Matters effort. The Junior Class thanked us for the use of the gossamer ceiling for the prom.

Our sympathies go out to Chuck Isackson on the loss of his mother. Remember them in your prayers.

Relay for Life - If anyone is interested in donating 10.00 to have a luminary bag in Honor or Memory of a loved one, they can contact Beth Burnard at work (829-1976) or cell (821-7467).

Business Notes

The Bridge is still closed and Cub Foods is still open

Jim of Jim's Electric has a nice building close to some really great neighbors (Bill Goers) for sale on Hwy 371.

Got something truly unique that could promote your business by being part of the Camp Confidence Auctions? Both the auctioneers and the MC's are great at promoting the businesses that support the auction during the course of the Sertoma Mariucci Fiesta.

Rumor Corner
  • Gosh Pam Sachs shouldn't have put a picture of her and the naughty horse in the newsletter. It went right to his head and he decided to buck her off the next ride. Back to school he goes. Mary probably didn't come to today's meeting because the whole experience scared the heck out of her. Cowboy Pam is proud of the fact that she got up and walked home!!
  • Welcome back Bob Sherman.
  • David Allen Pundt isn't kissing babies yet but he is handing out Sertoma Scholarships and paying fines for people who wear his buttons. Hmm is he gonna be our Barack or our Hillary?
  • J-Lo's purse, Wow!! Karen Owen had to pay a fine and was showing off her prize today.
  • Bonnie Cumberland was giving color lessons to the dog pound. Mauve was being bandied about. Something about the color pink and men got the sergeants going today and Bryan fined Rory, Mike Boen, and Tom Krekow for being "Pretty in Pink".
  • It was National Wear a Tie Sertoma Day according to Bryan and all the males not wearing theirs got fined.
  • Bryan has so much fun with his fines he didn't even allow poor George to get in a word edgewise. Don't worry though, George is like MacArthur--He shall return!!!!
  • Cathe Picek got rave reviews from Rory today. They were well deserved after all her efforts at Great in 08. Camp Confidence and Cathe seem like a terrific match-up. Good luck on your new job.
  • Sue Slaybaugh paid a brat fine today. I don't know if she was being naughty or if it had something to do with the guest at her table (DB Kelly Farm).
  • Get Kathy Williams to show you her new Batman spotlight. If you need Newton Advertising stuff, you just shine the spotlight and it has the logo just like in the Batman movies. We expect to see her in her Newton Cape and Mask next week.
