Matt
Meyer from the Baxter Police Department visited Sertoma
today to introduce us to Gator, the new canine dog recently
acquired by the department. Gator is not yet a year old,
still in training and still working through the bonding
process with Matt. The last dog the department had was
phased out in 2007. The new dog costs approximately $10,000.
Matt has applied to the sponsorship committee for some
funding to help make up the $1,700 deficit that still
remains and some members made individual contributions
today. Gator is a Belgian Malinois. A herding dog, they make
much better canine police dogs because they have far less
health problems and live longer than German shepherd. In
fact a shephard usually works about four or five years, but
Malinois have been used for up to ten years. Dogs are
blended into families and kept by their police handler 24-7.
They are used for human scenting, apprehending criminals and
finding stolen articles and narcotics. Matt remarked, "A
canine dog is a life saver for the officer and very helpful
for the whole community." Matt explained that the dog will
undergo certification every year. This is important because
the certifiers end up being expert witnesses in court cases
involving evidence produced with the help of the canine
units. Matt didn't feel Gator was ready for Bonanza, but
those who wanted to meet him were encouraged to do so after
the meeting.
Our other program was officer induction held on Tuesday from
6-8 p.m. on the beach at Confidence Learning Center.
Incoming President Mark Korte who has been acting president
since Julia left, introduced the new officers. They are
pictured with Mark. Special thanks was given to outgoing
treasurer Darren Larson and outgoing secretary Missy Lake at
the induction and the Wednesday meeting. There are still a
few jobs to fill--a secretary elect, the social committee
chair, and a sergeant or two. Steve Mau has generously
agreed to serve another year as Board Chair. Pam Sachs will
continue with the newsletter and many of the committee
people remain in place but there is always room for new
members. Kathi Nagorski and Ron Morris will be organizing
the programs. Laura Beilke is the new District Foundation
Representative. Sue VanWagner will organize the Sertoman of
the Day. The induction was conducted by our new District
Governor Karen Owen. Thanks to the Chapparal and Pam Bye for
catering. A special event at the induction was the boat ride
on the S S Michael which was made even more special when Rod
and Avis Converse made an unexpected appearance at the
event. They donated the boat in memory of their son and
didn't realize that fellow Sertomans were enjoying it the
same evening they decided to spend some time on the boat.
Rod is a charter member of the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club. |

| Announcements |
Father
Glen Moe was visiting today with Tom
Rosenberger who has been very active in
recruiting the Sertoma Club's support of the
Shoes for Haiti program. Tom
announced that Bonanza is now saving the
"precious" five gallon buckets that made all
the difference to the Haitians who need them
for their daily water supply haul. Father
Glen talked about how cold Brainerd was, how
much he appreciate Tom and the Sertoma
club's ongoing involvement, and talked about
the program. They have built 50 houses, the
educate and feed 2,000 kids a day with food
the buy from the natives to improve the
economy, and they currently have 8 full
secondary school scholarship students. |
|
July 2nd There will be a short meeting
of those involved in the database after the
meeting next Wednesday. Kari Barnes is also
looking for people to go to Lake Region
Storage and help clean up the Pipe and Drape
for the next season right after the meeting. |
|
LoAnn took the opportunity as the
president's stand in to thank Tom Krekow
and Pam Sachs for all the wonderful
photos of the Mariucci Fiesta. |

Schedule |
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there. |

| Sertoman of the Day |
Chris
Velasco and his brother have purchased a business called LMI.
The are a insured, licensed and certified landscape maintenance
company that does weekly mowing, snow removal, commercial and
residential professional grounds care and beach cleaning.
Chris is a cheerful young guy who joined Sertoma a month ago to
be active in the community. He spoke about how much he enjoys
the camaraderie at the meetings. He was encouraged to join by
his godmother, Pam Bye. Erin Donnelly is his significant other.
He enjoys snowmobiling, tubing and water skiing. His business is
located mainly in the East Gull Lake area. His most embarrassing
moment involved a bicycle, a large group of relatives and a
close encounter with a mailbox. |

Business Notes |
Pam Bye and the TimberMist catering service once again
proved what an excellent service they perform. We
stuffed ourselves with potato salad, fried chicken,
barbecued turkey, and three kinds of cookies. Call Pam
and her crew next time you need a catering service.
LMI Landscape Maintenance is a new business for our new
member Chris Velasco. He and his brother purchased the
company from their boss and are working hard at weekly
mowing, snow removal, commercial and residential
professional grounds care and beach clean-up services.

Kathy Williams handed the newsletter editor a cute
little notebook with a tiny pen attached the size of the
business card. Kathy is the Newton Advertising rep in
this area and encourages anyone needing specialty items
for golf tournaments (hole sponsorships) or company
employee picnics can call her at 831-2760.

Some
very important members of the community, Sertoma and the Camp
Confidence Board of Directors attended the beach party in their
Sunday go to meeting outfits. Needless to say, to get into the
beach party mode they had to go barefoot. One of them got fined
today for her shoelessness. Can you identify the bare feet and
shoes of the male member of the duo?
-
The outgoing secretary and treasurer got a much deserved
standing ovation for two years of service to Sertoma. Darren
gave Sandra Ehrich a one person standing ovation for taking over
for him.
-
Bill Goers continued his quest to be named heckler of the year
at Sertoma. He asked Matt if retired police dogs got security
jobs at donut shops. Then when Matt tried to use LoAnn as an
example when he was explaining what the dogs do when their
handlers are attacked, Bill piped up and that LoAnn would not
attack him "in his wildest dreams". We also got to meet his
lovely wife Vicki for the first time. They are pictured at the
induction. Bill refers to her as his "real" wife and refuses to
talk about the not so real ones.
-
Really nice wife fines abounded today, Dick Stoltman paid for
his also.
-
Speaking of "real". Diane Rook Johnson's friend Harvey didn't
have a business card for the newsletter. Mary was kind enough to
point out that Harvey was imaginary. My question is--was he a
rabbit or a pool boy?
-
Veronica Jensen had to pay Mary's $2 I hate the bank fine. It
was her turn--Mary picked on Joyce last about hogging her
groceries.
-
Carole Paulsen was trying to join the Hollywood runway crowd
today in her sunglasses. She had to pay the "she's so fine" fine
today.
-
Speaking of shoes at the beach party. Stevie Ray Mau couldn't
get away with his golf shoes at proper beach attire. Sometimes a
bird in hand (or stashed in the trunk with the golf bag) is not
worth it.
