Program
It was a two pie day at Sertoma. The guest speaker was Ron Burnard from the Sportland Cafe who is also the Mary Etta Pie person. His two scrumptious pies were auctioned off at the end of the meeting to provide a little extra money for his real reason for coming to Sertoma. Ron shared his experiences as a Shriner with us as well as showing us a very moving video about the good word that the Shriner's are doing with the children's hospital facilities. He encouraged us all to support their efforts especially by encouraging people with children that have orthopedic or burn problems to contact either of the two local numbers to get help (218-831-6637 or 218-851-1885). The Shriner's fund raising events support 22 hospitals including the one in Minneapolis. The Aadzuhman Shrine Club of Brainerd has 180 members. They want to invite everyone who is a motorcycle enthusiast to participate in their Paul Bunyan Shriner Rally which starts at 11 a.m. Beginning at Paul Bunyan Bowl. They have a website for more infor at www.paulbunyanshrinerrally.com

The local organization has a 7 passenger van to transport children and their families to the facility. All care is provided free of charge. About 94% of all money raised goes directly to the hospitals which are also well known for their teaching programs for doctors. Tom mentioned one of their outstanding "graduates" of the program, former local teacher and current state representative John Ward. Ron remarked, "I want to personally thank Sertoma for all the hard work you do that helps make the community what it is today." He went on to reiterate something that was stressed later on by Board Chairman Steve Mau, our flag program has had a tremendous impact on the veterans in the Brainerd area as well as everyone else with any kind of feeling of patriotism. Gary Walters dug deep and came up with $50 to take home the caramel apple confection while Veronica Jensen paid $47.50 for the rhubarb pie. Steve Mau had a great deal of fun pretending to be an auctioneer.

Thanks Sandra Bonde for taking notes.

July 31st Armed Forces Day at the Crow Wing County Fair. The crew is lined up to put up the flags. Call Mike Howard or sign up next week to help with take down. The issue of volunteers for the flag project has gotten serious enough to be discussed at the Board Meeting last week.
Julia Sullivan and Cathe Picek did a 42 minute marathon shopping expedition that sent sweat shirts, socks, underwear and shoes off to the wounded warriors. They are now looking for support in the form of 60 to 90 minute phone cards--anyone having contacts in the area should let Julia know.
Pictures Pictures Pictures--what happens when two shutterbugs get together and take photos--a tremendous number of new pictures up on the Webshots Camp Confidence site http://communitywebshots.com/user/campconfidence.com Tom Krekow added his considerable talents to the mix to produce some very professional picture of the Fiesta as well as the Golf and Fishing. Camp Confidence and Sertoma thank him for his efforts. Pam just bumbled along and took her usual stuff!! Tom created an excellent collage for all three Classic events. Rumor Corner
  • Mike Boen the ballot stuffer was trying to get us to fill in the extras at the good table!!
  • Milo needed his cargo shorts--lots of pockets to haul home the winnings.
  • What a great time we had auctioning off the pies--you have a fall-back career Steve.
  • Charlie Bartels is the "It's time for change" guy--maybe because he got aced out of a seat at the dog-pound table by the guy with the gun.
  • Let's hope Mary's rotator cuff heals in time for her to take on all her new responsibilities at Sertoma. Thanks for being a Good Enthusiastic Member Mary.
  • Wonder if the speed shoppers hire out for those of us who hate shopping?
  • Chairman Mau (anyone feel a little Chinese vibe there) certainly doesn't have the devil-may-care attitude of our previous board chairman. He was actually sitting by himself cramming for his presentation today.
