Program
Camp Sertoma is in progress at Confidence Learning Center and we welcomed the 8 core members of the team that is helping out this week and next. They are being assisted by various noon Sertoma members including Mike Howard, Tami Webb, Kari Robinson, and Laura Beilke. The group included: Pam Johnson(Fargo), Greg Gults (Chisago City), Gene Finger (Northfield), Chris Ellison (Northfield), Mike Onnen (St. James), Bette Lee (Northfield), Deb Joeger (Mapleton), Pete Alexander (St. Cloud) and Wayne Plagge (New Ulm). Many of these people hold dual memberships in their local Sertoma organization and the Camp Sertoma Club. The Camp Sertoma Club was formed for the sole purpose of providing direction for the deaf and hard of hearing Camp that started 8 years ago. The Camp has gone from one to two weeks and now encompasses double the amount of children. This year's group has 15 counselors who all come from Gaudellet University for the deaf and hard of hearing. Volunteers are mainly responsible for food service and this year their job has been so much easier because they actually have a food budget and do not have to rely solely on food shelves and charitable food suppliers. This group in residence also fills in for the counselors when needed and is responsible for the daily pictures on the website. The budget for Camp is $47,000 and campers are only charged a minimal fee to guarantee their attendance, so fund raising is a major focus of the Camp Sertoma group. They thanked us for our support and asked for volunteers to make pizza on Sunday July 15th (4) and cooks for Monday July 16th. If you can help, call the Camp and leave your name with Shari who will pass it on.

All of the great program activities such as swimming, fishing, crafts, canoeing, archery, obstacle courses, and the planetarium to name a few take on a totally new direction when you are working with a group of deaf or hard of hearing children. Laura Beilke is volunteering for the first time and she shared her feeling of awe at the wonderful things that are taking place at Camp Sertoma. Join the volunteers and see for yourself.

Thanks Cathe Picek for taking notes.

Paul Heinlein
Congratulations to our three inauguaral mentor award winners. This award has been around since 2004 but this is the first time we have participated in it. Tami Webb, Paul Heinlein, and Lori Rubin all sponsored a member and then worked with them until they qualified for their GEM Award.
Congratulations to Bob Nibbe, Kari Barnes, Nate Grotzke and Chuck Isackson who received their plaques that were not presented at the Officer Induction two weeks ago.
Gossamer Ceiling Set Up Thursday July 19th from 2-4 with Take Down on Monday July 23rd from 1-3.
July Board Meeting Tuesday, July 17th at 7 a.m. At TJ's Log Cabin.
Rory Coit presented some information from the Foundation along with a badge for our award banners. Giving is up 20% is the district and that is partly due to the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club and our participation as fellows and foundation members.
Rick Besmehn received an urgent request from his daughter and son-in-law who are with the military in England. There is an urgent need for underwear and socks for the injured soldiers who are airlifted from Iraq to Germany when they require surgery. The only clothes the more mobile ones have are hospital gowns and we sent around a collection box and ended up with $460 to purchase these items which will be mailed. Rick thought perhaps we could actually get more organized the next time we do this and contact major retailers for their support. This weekend the super shoppers Rick appointed are going to hit the Crazy Days bargain shelves and get as much as they can.
Pictures Pictures Pictures--what happens when two shutterbugs get together and take photos--a tremendous number of new pictures up on the Webshots Camp Confidence site http://communitywebshots.com/user/campconfidence.com Tom Krekow added his considerable talents to the mix to produce some very professional picture of the Fiesta as well as the Golf and Fishing. Camp Confidence and Sertoma thank him for his efforts. Pam just bumbled along and took her usual stuff!! Tom created an excellent collage for all three Classic events. Click here for the Mariucci photo collage.
Gossamer Ceiling Set Up and Take Down the weekend before the 4th--contact Paul Heinlein to get the times and offer to help.

Sertoman of the Day

Of Note

Rumor Corner
  • Tom Steiger got welcomed back by Bill when he had to pay a fine for someone who was already maxed out. Actually the kinder gentler sergeants on their last day chose to give many of the fines which were for good deeds to other people to pay. This gave people like Poor Gary who cooked the prime rib a chance to be recognized but not have to pay for standing out in the crowd. Great idea sergeants, your replacements need to take note.
  • Happy Birthday Lori Rubin
  • Rick Besmehn has a new nickname--the underwear king.
  • Julia Sullivan's dad told her since she was now President of Sertoma she was a CRPP. That is Crown Royal President Princess. Since her immediate successor and assistant is Mark Korte that makes him CRAPP!
  • Bob Nibbe announced himself as being from MNDOT and saying, "You may have seen us around town."
  • Laura Beilke now has a new job, bar tour guide for the Camp Sertoma volunteers.
  • Congratulations Aaron Meester--he is gonna be a double papa.
  • Lot's of people paid fines for being happy we were getting new sergeants.
  • New building for the Sears Lady was costly also.
  • Welcome new member Sharon Skluzacek from Optimum Communications Corporation
