Program
We had a power point program and four different speakers to explain “Ready or not Here They Come” which is a presentation by the Brainerd Lakes Area of Commerce Workforce Committee. The presenters included Twyla Flaws, Pat Swarthout, Mary Gottsch and our own Steve Lackner. Their ideas focus on training the 80% of students in the Brainerd area who do not complete training or a degree program and need to become a viable part of the workforce. By the year 2010 fifty percent of the people in Brainerd will be over 55. The younger people who are leaving the area need to be trained for the high growth and high pay occupations in our area to keep them here. Workplace needs include a behavior and orientation toward work that goes beyond step-by-step task performance. Knowledgeable workers need to demonstrate highly skilled adaptive blends of technical and human relations abilities. The presenting group is touring the Brainerd Lakes area as well as contacting legislators and educators with their ideas of creating a partnerships that will help to revamp the educational system so that learning is linked to worker competency. This partnership must also include the parents. According to this group, all Minnesotans need two more years of higher education geared toward training for those jobs that will involve 80% of them.

Thanks to Jean Mershon for taking notes
