Brian Bachman, the president of the North American Bear
Foundation, which is headquartered in Brainerd, was our very
interesting and entertaining guest speaker today. Brian got
interested in forming an alliance to work to preserve the bears
because of his work with the National Wild Turkey Federation.
The NABF mission statement reads as follows, The NABF is
dedicated to the native bears and all other wildlife of North
America by promoting public awareness, education, and sound
management of our natural resources and through habitat
conservation restoration and enhancement. Basically what this
means is that Brian travels all over North America working with
people who hunt bears, wildlife management agencies, and people
who are having problems with bears. For instance, he is off to
Kodiak Island to work with grizzlies in conjunction with
Wildlife Forever and the Brown Bear Trust. The State of
Minnesota has decided to let his group be in charge of its bear
education program next year. That effort is threefold--promote
safe and responsible hunting, educate the public, and finally,
provide speakers for groups who are interested in bears. They
will also be helping in the effort to count the bears in
Minnesota. This is a very tricky task and those doing the
counting can only estimate that our population is around 20,000
because of work that has been done with tetracycline which ends
up in bones and teeth and can be analyzed after a hunter has
harvested a bear. Bears used to be just varmints that anyone
could hunt but when their population got down into the lower
part of five thousand, they were granted big game status with
protection. Brian remarked, "
The bear is a tough animal to
manage and they are a steadily growing population any place
where black bears are located." He particularly mentioned the
problems the eastern states like New Jersey were having. He
brought samples of his very colorful and well written magazine
called North American Bear to share with us. A question and
answer session followed Brian's presentation. We learned that
bears are nocturnal so if they are bothering your bird feeders,
you should take them down at night. Nuisance bears are always
destroyed by the DNR, so one should not call them unless the
bear has become aggressive. An aggressive black bear is best
faced and scared off by making loud noises and actually fighting
back if it is attacking you. Bears range in our area anywhere
from two to ten miles. The conclusion of the question session
was a very funny story about a big brawny biker guy camping in a
woods and cowering in his tent when a black bear came by. He was
"saved" by a small boy beating a pan assisted ably by a
little Chihuahua dog. This was an excellent program, thanks very
much Brian. If you want more information about his organization
go to www.nabf.org and
check out the web site. |

| Notes |

We received a very nice lengthy thank you letter from Aimee
Spitzack, Director of Marketing and Special Events at Camp
Confidence. She summed up the whole letter in her handwritten
addition at the end, "I couldnšt have done it without you! The joy
and smiles you have helped us bring cannot be measured and we are
very lucky to have Sertoma as a supporter." |

Rumor Corner: |
|
|
- Everyone got fined today, simply because someone told Edie
she wasn't doing her job. Then she and Hawk picked out the
people who had to pay $2 for some transgression. The fun part
was those people got to pick someone else to join them in the $2
Fine for a Day Club.
- Someone, and it could have been the boss was totally
disappointed at a little Computer One Plus gathering about the
tree huggers who wanted to sit in the shade and drink liquid
refreshments rather than play volleyball. Does it sound like
anyone we know?
- Who but Hawk could get a speeding ticket under his very own
billboard which is actually close to the Casino.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
