Brainerd Minnesota Sertoma
Thanks to Joe Schultes for another great fill in idea for today since we did not have a scheduled speaker. All of the rookies who were present got up and introduced themselves giving us a very short version of a Sertoman of the Day Speech including some very interesting facts.

Loren Kmett , an audiologist with Avaba Audiology and Hearing Care was the first speaker. He was followed by Ryan Hokanson of Hokanson Chiropractic and Injury who is praying for snow. Jason Bertram let us know he was a native of the area, a budding Jesse Ventura (he coaches wrestling), and an employee of Northwestern Mutual. Lee Anne and Denny Benjamin followed with their version of the Brady Bunch. They have a total of eleven children between them and they keep them hopping around the clock and playing those golden oldies in their Teddy Bear Sound capacities too. Sandy Kleist of LSS Financial Counseling works with people who need to create budgets and clean up their money problems when she is not home chasing her four year old twins around.

Amy Doyle hit everyone up for donations to the Rookie Party, announced that she was divorced and "looking" and let us know she works for Grand Casino, Mille Lacs. Standing beside her was Nadine Wade, also a Grand Casino employee. She has 8 children all by herself and 23 grandchildren to enrich her life. Rod Johnson, who is too new to be in the data base and works with commercial real estate, let us know that he lived on one of the 64 Bass Lakes in the area and he got his real estate license when Gerald Ford was president. Sue Beck who works with social services was very adamant about being the only person in the room who wasn't looking for additional customers. Sue Johnson told us how she got to be the "Soul Doctor" and had to admit with a little prompting from Pam Sachs that she races drag cars at BIR and comes from a family long associated with racing. She wants to hit 9 seconds by the time she reaches the age of 60.

Patty Hartman was very quick to tell us she works for the 3 best radio stations in the Brainerd Lakes area--WJJY, B93 and K101.5. Cheryal Lee Hills wears several commercial hats but joined Sertoma under the auspices of Community Sound and Security. Believe it or not, Cheryal admitted her secret vice was a good cigar to cheers from the Dog Pound. Linda Turpin, the new HART director, has something in common with Pam Sachs and Karla Nelson--she grew up as a Gull Lake girl. She says her beautiful daughter looks like Demi Moore. Lori Elwood just spoke to us about her Center of Possibilities so she put in a plug for her newest gift item, the table top fountain. Julia Sullivan thought maybe she had the Brady Bunch award socked up with her 8 between her and husband # ????. Julia does say this one is the last one. She also admitted it was the day she would rather be a barfly at Shep's. If Curt Hawkinson or Mary Aakus Olson reads this and calls Pam before next Tuesday, they will win their sawbuck.

What a great program and what a talented, enterprising, funny, and diverse group of rookies. We are looking forward to working with you in the future and to a great Rookie Party. Speaking of which, be sure to let Amy know if you have some prize or money to donate to the party.

Announcements
Aug 1-3 Fishing has No Boundaries Inaugural Event--Confidence Learning Center.
Aug 4-9 United Way Week of Caring The United Way is painting 5 local houses as part of their United Way Week of Caring. Laura Bielke spoke briefly to the group (Laura's new job is with the United Way. Cheryal Hills also has a new job a the Lakes Country Journal). Since over 500 volunteers will be needed for this job, Roy Miller was put in charge of organizing a Sertoma Team to become involved in the painting project.
Aug 8 - The Club will continue to support the Camp Sertoma Golf Tournament. We will have our very own team competing. Anyone who is willing to commit a whole day to golfing and the festivities that follow can give Rory Coit a business card by Aug 1st to be eligible for the drawing for the team.
Laura Beilke, Kathy Bittner Lee, and Roy Miller are in charge of the Sertoma Painting Team. They are trying to get together a group that would be willing to paint one of the five houses that United Way has pledged to paint before fall this year. See one of them to sign up.
The Swinging Sertomans have three gigs coming up. They will be in Elbow Lake this weekend for their festival, at the County Fair on Aug 6th for two free performances, and at the Purple Heart Convention in Rochester. Rory, as acting president, took this opportunity to thank the group once again for their major contribution to our club.
Jim Potvin and Dave Burggraff are in Albuquerque, New Mexico, attending the National Convention.
Julia Sullivan wants us to know that Pipe and Drape Season is starting. First event will be Sept. 2nd with more details arriving. The Gossamer Ceiling crew was thanked for coming to the rescue in their last minute operation last week.
Gary Walters took this opportunity to congratulate two Gem Award winners (left and right pictures) Robin Loftis and Joyce Seymour, our district secretary Deb Ryan, and our Pipe and Drape guy Mike Howard.

Greeter Schedule
Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Patty Hartman.

Sertoman of the Day
Thank You's
Dear Sertoma, Thank you for helping to sponsor our trip to Exchange City, We learned a lot about the business world. Grades 5, 6 and 7 at St. Francis School.
Dear Brainerd Noon Sertoma, With appreciation your support! North East Brainerd Neighbohood Association thanks you for your support and vests for the day of the Brainerd City Wide clean up.

Dear Sertoma, Thank you for the plant and your thoughts and prayers during our time of sorrow. Jo Lovitz and the family of Jeri Sather.
Rumor Corner:
  • Paul Gropper has an additional job--Builders Marketing.
  • Bob Nibbe has lots of additional jobs mostly related to farming. He is selling hay and strawberries and invited everyone to his humungous garage sale next week.
  • Karla Nelson was a virgin dog pounder this week.
  • Pam Sachs got caught laundering money--ask Jeff Olson to repeat the story. She also has a great picture of the motorcycle that almost ran her over at Camp Confidence on Saturday. Bob and Ann Sherman looked terrific on their Harleys at the motorcycle rally in another picture, but she was warned that it would not get by the Midwest Captions official "censor". The Up NorthRally was a great new fundraiser for Confidence Learning Center. Papa Franz didn't look too shabby on his bike either.
  • Happy Birthday Edie--in spite of all the harassment by the group we do appreciate your great work as Sergeant.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the current photographs or check out the new online directory go to:  http://communities.msn.com/BrainerdNoonSertoma/_whatsnew.msnw
