Gary WaltersStand up comedy was on the agenda today at Brainerd Noon Sertoma as Chairman of the Board, Gary Walters, spoke to us about his across the USA trip by bicycle to raise money for Kinship Partners, or as Jim Potvin put it, "The Real Story Behind Gary's Behind". Mr. Potvin paid dearly for his remarks at the beginning of Gary's speech because he got called into the "Act" to be the prop manager and had to display Gary's special Burley Recumbent Bike for the audience several times. Gary highly recommended his $3,000 investment in the special bicycle since it enabled him to make the trip without getting sore or seriously endangering his health. It's funky appearance made him friends everywhere he and his brother went on their trip. Why would a portly gentleman like Gary commit himself to making a 1543 mile trip from New Orleans to Minnesota to raise over $10,000 for Kinship Partners? Gary himself said,"There is no reason why you do something like this." He did go on to explain that he committed to a charity because he felt that it was a worthwhile endeavor and definitely a challenge. He became involved in Kinship partners in 1998 when he and his family joined the program. His reason for becoming involved explains his willingness to do this "crazy stunt," If yJim Potvinou want to change the world, change it one kid at a time!" (The money is still coming in. John Nelson, former Sertoman, and active Kinship partner person who just had his relationship with his Kinship Partner Dusty featured in the National IQ Magazine, pledged $10 per pound for each pound that Gary officially lost at the end of Gary's speech today. That amounted to $150 since Gary did lose 15 pounds on the trip.) This was actually an old idea from one of Gary's sessions at goal-setting. For years, he has been talking about a bike trip across the USA. As he pointed out, he did choose the shorter route going from north to south but, nevertheless, it was an impressive but dangerous trip. Although he tried to make light of the situation, Gary feels that anyone who plans such a trip should be much more aware of the routes taken and the hazards of the road. Gary entertained us with some very interesting anecdotes about his journey. If you did not hear today's speech, ask Gary sometime about Karl and Billy Lee, the flat tire and the bar story, how I almost lost my toes to the alligator story, the how to fix a flat with super glue story, the Pumpkin on a bike on Arkansas TV story, and how he really feels about people in Mississippi. Thanks Gary for being willing to subject yourself to this ordeal and the humorous approach you have to share with the world about Travels with Gary Walters.

Brainerd Sertoma ClubThanks Rookies for a very entertaining moment at today's meeting. Diane Ulmen got up to represent the Rookie Committee and had everyone who was sitting next to a jigsaw puzzle piece come to the front of the room and attempt to put together a puzzle relating to the rookie party. When it proved to be more difficult that Diane thought it should be, she was reassured that being a rookie was "curable". Anyway thanks Pooch for holding out your puzzle piece and making it even more difficult. The final product announced the upcoming date of the party which will be held on Thursday, September 18th. Edie continued to contribute funds by fining everyone who had not attended a social function .
Both Reed Campbell and Beth Burnard were promoting the Relay for Life which will be held this Friday. Beth was overjoyed when Rick Besmehn donated his Pot of Gold Winnings to the Relay. Our prayers go out to Jo Lovitz whose sister was killed in the automobile accident last week in Merrifield. Keep Jo in your prayers.
Kevin and the Noon Sertomans, I want to thank you again for the wonderful honor you have given me. It is especially valued because it came from your group. I have always appreciated the approach you all take in your service to mankind. Having a good time while serving your fellow citizens and community. Having taken part in Pipe and Drape, sitting in on the noon luncheons for a couple of years and watching the Swinging Sertomans, I know this to be true; serving does not have to seem like work. In my trainings I deliver to community leaders, we talk about how to create positive change in communities. One of the five key factors is Incentives and of that there are three components: understanding why change is needed, celebrating success, and recognizing good works. You did the last two very well at the Anniversary Dinner and inspired me to do even more. Karl Samp

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
