Program
Dr. BBQ, Ray LampeMeet Dr. BBQ, Ray Lampe, who is in town for the much advertised Jaycee Area Barbecue to benefit Junior Achievement, Habitat for Humanity and the Jaycees Park. Ray was introduced by Jaycee member, Elyssa Weber, who also organized a drawing to give away several pairs of tickets to the Premiere Party which will be held Friday night. The actual event is being held from 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, August 3, in the area behind the City Hall. A $2 admission fee will get you in to enjoy all the free activities including the Pockets the Clown Show, Rhythm of the Rails, balloon sculpting and face painting as well as live music from Deuces Wild (8-10 p.m.) and Silent Partner (10 to 12 p.m.). Dr. BBQ will be teaching three classes also during the Saturday event: chicken at 11:00 a.m., Ribs at 1:30 p.m. and Pork at 6:00 p.m. Ray commented, “The Jaycees have just been great and we are happy to be here!” He went on to explain how barbecue competitions have become national events and some of the best teams are coming to Brainerd. He personally would love to come back here every year but politely declined all invitations to the Ice Fishing Tournament, preferring to stay in warm sunny Florida where he spends the winters. He gave us a great deal of information including an introduction to the new ABA (American Barbecue Association) and a description of his 20 year experiences in the field. The competition is for $15,000 in prize money and entries are judged in four different fas 8297761 Kathy Christensen meat categories. Participants present 7 portions to six judges that are evaluated on appearance, tenderness and taste. Ray went on to say that regional differences in taste do not greatly affect the outcome of the contests, “Good is good, and those who make good barbecue win all over the country”.

Notes
Of Note The Little Moran Sertoma Club which does some very fine fundraising in the form of the Fall Pheasant Hunt and winter Perch Jerk will no longer be a separate club. They will become part of the Brainerd Noon group and continue to sponsor these activities and make them open to more people. A special board meeting was held to discuss issues of dues, etc. We would like to welcome all those Little Moran members who will be “new” to our group.
Camp SertomaThis is the great group of 85 kids and 20 staff who spent the week at Camp Sertoma this year. The Camp Sertoma Club under the auspices of Gayle Grossman is sponsoring the golf tournament at the Vintage Course in Staples on Friday, August 2nd. It is a chance to meet another great group of Confidence Volunteers--the Landmark Volunteers, who will be working the games on various holes. There will be samples of Cajun and BBQ pheasant on Hole 10. There is a chance to win $1,000 for the hole in one contest. All of this money is needed to finish paying for Camp Sertoma.

Team Players for Sertoma Committees
  • See Kari Robinson if you would like to be a part of the “fun” group--the Social Committee
  • See Pam Sachs if you would like to join the group that helps take notes at meetings. With four people on the committee, it means 12 meetings per person.
  • Talk to Tami Webb about joining any of the other committees.
Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
