Our speaker did not show today so there wasn’t a program.
Instead, here is some information about a new project going on
at Camp Confidence with the Landmark Volunteers. This year the
Camp is again among 65 lucky locations in 19 states that is
hosting a two week program for these 14 ½ to 18 year old
enthusiastic workers. They applied to this non profit
organization whose stated goals are to find young people who
“are looking for an opportunity to do something for others, to
expand their world through community service, and to give
something back to society. Camp has put them to work on a much
needed project--a patio for the west end of the Mariucci Lodge.
Those of us who have been at camp remember it was a rather
overgrown area with a large hole. Thompson Concrete donated
about 10,000 blocks for the project and the kids are well into
the work. They have also been doing some other landscaping and
working with program.
The program attempts to involve students
in community service at a young age and give them many
intangible rewards including an increased sense of self worth as
well as community service credits and letters of recommendation
that will be useful in their future plans. The group includes 12
volunteers and one team leader: Leah Conn, who is 25 years old
,grew up in Newton MA, and now lives in San Jose, California
where she teaches kindergarten. This is her third Landmark trip.
Last August she was in Ithaca, NY with a group working at the
Paleontological Research Institute. Earlier this summer she
supervised a group at Gilmanton Iron Works, NH and worked with
Easter Seals Camp Sno-Mo at the Hidden Valley Boy Scout
Reservation.
The rest of the volunteers include: Miranda Bryan, 16,
Cincinnati OH, Sara Coren, 17, Gladwyne, PA; Bethany Courage,
16, Bethesda, MD; Danny Demeshulam, 17, Bedford, NY; Kaitlin
Fox, 14, Lincolnshire, IL; Jacob Goldstein, 17, Pomona, NY;
Liana Hultquist, 17, Cary, NC; Jimmy Kelsey, 15, Harwich, MA;
Peter Kim, Harrison, NY; Jacob Kovner, 16, Pacific Palisades, CA
;Caitlin Maynard, 17, Convent Station, NJ; and Amy Smith, 15,
Annapolis, MD. |

RUMOR Corner
The buzz around Sertoma today was who has taken over the harem
(Joe Schulte) and whether this means a new head of pipe and drape
since the usual manager of the harem was noticeably absent.
Thanks again Sergeants for some great entertainment. Dave’s
stand up comedy routine was the highlight of the day. The new word
of the day-(ask Brenda Meech to define it) is “beridgerrent”.
Brenda got in a great zinger that may cause Todd Alguire to change
his first name. |

HUMOR Corner
A Modern Parable
And God populated the earth with broccoli and cauliflowers and
spinach and green and yellow vegetables of all kinds, so Man and
Woman should have long and healthy lives.
And Satan created McDonalds. And McDonald’s brought forth the
99 cent double cheeseburger and Satan said to Man, “You want fries
with that?” And Man said, “Super Size them.” And Man gained
pounds.
And God created the healthful yogurt, that Woman might keep her
figure that man found so fair. And Satan froze the yogurt, and he
brought forth chocolate, nuts and brightly colored sprinkle candy
to put on the yogurt, and Woman gained pounds.
And God said, “Try my crispy fresh salad.” And Satan brought
forth creamy dressings, bacon bits, and shredded cheese. And there
was ice cream for dessert. And Woman gained pounds.
And God said, “I have sent your heart healthy vegetables and
olive oil with which to cook them.” And Satan brought forth
chicken-friend steak so big it needed its own platter. And Man
gained pounds and his bad cholesterol went through the roof.
And God brought forth running shoes and Man resolved to lose
those extra pounds. And Satan brought forth cable TV with remote
control so Man would not have to toil to change the channels and
Man gained pounds.
And God said, “You’re running up the score, Devil.”
And God brought forth the potato, a vegetable naturally low in
fat and brimming with nutrition. And Satan peeled off the
healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and
deep-fat friend them and he created sour cream dip.
And Man clutched his remote control and ate the potato chips
swaddled in cholesterol. And Satin saw and said, “It is good.” And
Man went into cardiac arrest.
God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery ….. And Satan
created HMOs. . . |

Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |
