Today's speaker was rookie legislator Dale Walz Today's speaker was rookie legislator Dale Walz. Dale was a newly elected area representative who traveled to this session of the Minnesota State Legislature expecting to be gone from his job as Captain/Investigator for the Baxter Police Department for about 4 months. This year's special session made his initiation a 6 month one. As District 12A Representative, Dale participated in several committees including Jobs and Economic Development Finance, Commerce Policy, Vice Chair of Tourism and Crime Prevention. His euphoria at being elected and actually being sworn into office turned into a job that involved long hours and lots of hard work. He tried not to blame anyone for the length of the session when he said, "It just didn't work" meaning the Republican-Democrat-Independent conglomeration of control that existed. He and his colleagues faced 4,000+ new bills that definitely reinforced his "learning curve". Dale was introduced by Jinny Haugen-Segler, our Sertoman who was his campaign manager.  He went on to say, "The only promise I ever made was to do my best." He felt that he had made a difference and is looking forward to next year's efforts. The question and answer session at the end of the meeting talked about two major issues. The first one was felons with guns and the second one which caused more discussion was the unicameral legislature idea. Dale said he did not support the idea but he did support getting the idea onto a ballot so the people in Minnesota could decide. His chief object was putting more power in less people's hands. He was quick to point out that Nebraska, the only unicameral state, has just as much or more of a problem with special sessions. Dale was introduced by Jinny Haugen-Segler, our Sertoman who was his campaign manager.
