Heidi Funk, the new Director of the United Way of Crow Wing County Heidi Funk, the new Director of the United Way of Crow Wing County took over her position on June 14th, one day after our big tornado. She spent some of her time discussing what was done through the United Way efforts for the tornado victims. Heidi ended up with $80,000 to work with to date and organized her work by getting a list from the assessment office of the victims and ordering a manual from the St. James area that detailed their experience with tornado aftermath.

She then went on to discuss her job in general "United Way is at the forefront of building partnerships, forging consensus and maximizing resources to address critical needs in communities across America.," is a simple statement of the group's purpose. United Way invests Brainerd's dollars in five major areas to improve the quality of life in our communities:
  • helping children and youth succeed
  • strengthening and supporting families
  • promoting self-sufficiency
  • building vital and safe neighborhoods
  • supporting vulnerable and aging populations

Brainerd United WayThe allocation process involves a panel of community members who determine just how the Brainerd United Way pie is divided. The new drive begins on September 20th and Heidi will soon be contacting businesses to start the process of raising money. If you have not been involved in the United Way Campaign and wish more information, she can be contacted at 218-829-2619. FAS 838-5190 Joelle Schmidt.

Through their funding and community building efforts, United Ways are an integral part of the nation's human services system. United Ways are, in effect, partners with government in the uniquely American blend of public and private funding and service delivery. We welcome Heidi to the Brainerd area and wish her great success with her new job.

Sertoman of the Day

Susie SeriousShopper Susie SeriousShopper was born at the Mall of America when her mother couldn't quite leave the storewide super sale when it was time to go to the hospital. She is a greeter at one of the local department stores. She moved to the Brainerd area in search of better parking spaces for her Super Sport Shopper pictured above. Her most embarrassing moment was when she bought the exact same outfit in two different stores because she couldn't resist the sale price. Her Sertoma sponsor was too embarrassed to admit that HE brought her in.

Notes
Golf, golf, golf anyone? Two opportunities for a Sertoma golf team are coming up.
