Kathy Machula, a new member of the Brainerd Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce enthusiastically presented her view of the chamber's role in the community. She discussed at length the involvement in promoting commercial development in the area and the role of tourism since those are the well-known responsibilities of the agency. Sertomans were encouraged to make use of the informational facilities especially when planning activities for out of town guests. The Chamber offers many computer services on their website and is the best place to find accommodations, to look for a new job, or to promote your business.
She especially wanted to talk about special events. She cleared up the relationship between the Community Action group and the Chamber by explaining that it is a
"sister-like" thing. The Chamber works closely with the Community Action group but does not fund any of their programs. The merger with the Cross Lake office has provided an opportunity for expansion. Monthly events for business people that provide great opportunities for networking include CHOW time, bi monthly noon dinner meetings, and one evening event sponsored by different businesses from 5-7 called Business After Hours.
The Chamber Offices in Brainerd and Cross Lake are worth a visit just to see the wealth of information offered there. A little known function of the Chamber relates to its
"political" role. Not only do they preside at functions like the opening of the new highway August 9th (hooray, hooray), but they provide a sounding board for business people with major concerns. For instance they were instrumental in getting an increased number of flights into the Brainerd Airport due to this kind of a request. So, all you business people out there, remember what a great resource the Chamber is and come out to
Craguns August 30th to support the fund-raising golf tournament. The money is used for community efforts and it promises to be a great tournament. Or join the Chamber in celebrating the new highway at the reception at 10:30 August 9th at the Black Bear. Or enjoy Crosslake Days August 5th-13th with many activities including retail specials and a chili cookout. Or enjoy the first city wide Crazy Days coming up in Brainerd/Baxter. Or , Or , Or. . . . . . .

Our Sertoma club has two new badges-one honoring our club for sponsoring Serteens and one for our foundation contributions. We received a very nice letter from Patty M.
Tanquary, Sponsorship Program Manager in which she says about the new club,
"The enclosed banner medallion is in recognition of Brainerd Area Sertoma Club's latest (and possibly greatest!) Service to Mankind." |
