Steve
Hesse is the new general manager of the Crow Wing
County Fair. He was a prison guard for 17 years and
he was not one bit afraid of the Dog Pound. He
warned them all not to heckle and they seemed to be
a little bit intimidated (Steve had a little advance
warning from our program director). The job as
general manager had been vacant for about three
months and Steve accepted the position in March of
2009. He explained a little about the tremendous
amount of work necessary to produce a county fair.
The total number of employees necessary to produce
this event is around 80. Steve complimented the
members of the board for their excellent work. This
fair is a jewel to this community to quote Mr. Hesse.
Well over 200 people belong to the Association which
costs $10 a year and he encouraged everyone to join.
The Fair has a long history with an early start in
1897 in someone's back yard on Oak Street. At one
time it was also held in the old armory. The three
different locations changed in 1937 when it was
permanently situated only in Brainerd. The present
location was used first in 1961. Crow Wing County
owns the property and the Fair Board leases it every
ten years. There are 36 permanent buildings that are
used in off season for boat storage. There is also a
shooting range. The maintenance peope are seasonal.
About 31 events are held at the Fairgrounds
throughout the year including the circus, snowmobile
derbies, and other activities. Many businesses and
civic organizations need to step up to plate and
help sponsor the fair since funding has been cut for
next year. Over 100,000 people attend our fair which
is usually 4th or 5th in the state out of the 95
overall total. Volunteers and fund raising groups
are a big part of the fair. Exhibitors, commerical
vendors, free entertainment sponsored by the Mills
Fleet Farm Stage, the historical building, kids
country, horse shows, and grandstand events draw
many visitors who will enjoy the event August
4th-6th this year. Motocross, extreme bull riding
and the demo derby are always popula. The $10 enter
the demo derby prize, the gun twirler and the
curling club are all new ideas at the Fair this
year! |

| Announcements |

The theme for the year in Sertoma is
"energize" and President LoAnn is
embracing it wholeheartedly. LoAnn announced
the rookie list--encouraging everyone to
involve them in Sertoma activities. |
|
Karen Owen gave a brief summary of the
Nashville Convention. She reported that
our new International President is promoting
energy and more membership. About 350 people
attended and some major elections were held.
Debbie Larson from Northfield Minnesota was
elected to be Director at Large. The color
for the year is orange and the new pins for
new members will be an energize theme.
FAMWAY was one seminar they attended.
Fundraising is three fold--it does include
camaraderie and the chance to inform the
community of what Sertoma is all about.
Karen thanked the club for sending
representation to the convention. |
Don't
forget flags, pipe and drape and safe ears
at the Crow Wing County Fair if you
have signed up to help. |
Grant
application for Winter Wonderland
Sponsorship are available online at the
Sertoma site. They are also linked to the
Winter Wonderland Site. Encourage applicants
to go and get a copy to fill out. These will
be officially completed by late April or
early May. |

Schedule |
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there. |

Proper packing is right at your fingertips according to
R.J. Corkum Nyks, author of "Packing by the Book", he
says it's easy. Hold up your hand, spread your fingers
and follow the five laws of perfect packing that will
always be at your fingertips when it's time to plan the
packing for your next trip.
THUMB (RULE OF THUMB) don't pack anything that is new
and untried. Wear it around the house for one evening if
you have to. Without exception, each item should be
comfortable.
INDEX FINGER (POINTER) Pack for the season you are
pointing into, but in the colors you are wearing now.
For example, if it's fall where you live, but you are
headed south of the border where it's summer, pack
summer clothes in the fashion colors of fall.
MIDDLE FINGER (CENTRAL IDEA) though this is the tallest
finger, it should not signal that more is better. Do you
need to have a completely new outfit for every day of
your trip? If you repeat, is anyone going to see you who
will know what you had on the day before yesterday?
RING FINGER (CARTIER TRIPLE BAND) Layers. This word
should have the same impact and significance for you
that the word "wheels" had on the luggage industry: If
you wear your clothes in layers that you can rearrange,
shed, mix and match, you will travel in style, every
trip, every time.
LITTLE FINGER (LAST BUT NOT LEAST) Shoes are the
foundation of your comfort, or lack of it. You remember
the little piggy yelling all the way home? The truth
was, his shoes were pinching his toes. If your shoes are
not comfortable, you might as well stay home.
These handy tips will serve up the perfect combination
of clothes for any trip. Luggage you can manage is the
key to any vacation. No matter how wealthy you are, and
how many suitcases you can afford to schlep along, there
is a greater satisfaction in getting it done smartly.

-
Thanks Kathy Williams for trying to take a picture of out
speaker for the klutz--your newsletter editor screwed up all the
pictures by accidentally turning off auto focus--duh.
-
The fishing talk continues--we are starting a new reality show
"Fishing with the Old Farts" starring the Dog Pound.
-
Joyce Frid, Art Becker, Bonnie Cumberland--so many newspaper
stars so little time to read the Brainerd paper!
-
Let's see who has the most per person television--Lee and Karla
Nelson have 6 for 2? Anyone beat that. Speaking of televisions,
some people lost theirs because they didn't realize lightning
can strike through the coax cable!
-
Mary Marana is all moved in, doing fine, and appreciates all the
help!!!
-
The Dog Pound was worried--the muffler guy (exercise equipment
guru in disguise) was gonna burn those cute knees. How do you
fix mufflers in shorts?
-
Happy Birthday Kathy Williams! Cathe Picek paid a happy birthday
fine.
-
Gary Walters Happy Fine-learned how to stop on roller blades.
-
LOAnism--Dog Pound frowning because the food was arriveing and
"they didn't like the smell of it". She has her very own scepter
she brought home from Nashville. IThere was this great picture
of this handy dandy gadget that lights up in several colors but
alas poor Pam she screwed up the camera.
-
Paul Williams got microphone lessons from the tooth fairy today.
She knew she could get away with not saying her business but he
was NEW!
-
Even though Karen pinky sweared not to tell, she did have to
admit to going downtown to the honkytonks in Nashville. She
admitted to hearing more than she saw. The bands play in the
front windows of the downtown bars. They did attend Opryland.
-
Definitely a summer day at Sertoma. Some big empty expanses at
the tables.
-
Chuck Brenny is sporting a black eye that he claims he got in a
bar fight.
-
Terry thought while he was out of town Risky Business joined the
club after examing LoAnn's scepter.
-
Scott Fisher had to pay a fine for his hole in one. He hopes the
next one rolls by since that one was so expensive.
-
Gene Farone claimed its been so cold he had to drive the
snowplow truck.
-
Terry was busy checking out rodeo shirts to recommend to DAP. He
was kind of subdued today.
-
Terry recommended Depends, Viagra or something to energize the
Dog Pound.
