Program
Kinship Partners was the focus of this Sertoma meeting. The group has a waiting list that is back up to 50 with the majority of these being boys. Their campaign will focus this year on men in mentoring. Mike Boen and his crew at the radio station are developing ads and strategies to support this. Kinship Director David Downing asked for our help with the Back to School Picnic. Each year Kinship provides an end of the summer event that includes backpacks full of school supplies and personal hygiene products. Last year attendance was over 300 and puts a big burden on the Kinship Staff. David Downing is looking for volunteers to help with the serving and games at the Lum Park Event this year. It will give his staff more time to connect with the partners and their families. Thursday, August 20th at 4:30 is the date. Six to eight people are needed but twelve would be better. Contact David if you are interested. Donating school supplies and personal hygiene items is also a possibility. The Kohls company will organize the bags.

John Raboin was a part of the program since he has been involved in this promotion from the beginning. He complimented David Downing as the leading force in Kinship. In 2003 John and Gary were running and came up with the idea for riding a bicycle from New Orleans to Brainerd (Gary was going to do this any way) to raise money for Kinship. The 19 day ride earned over $10,000. In 2004 he sat on the Water Tower and promoted 40 new mentors and more money. In 2005 he walked from North to South in 22 1/2 days with his children. Gary is not big in training. Gary is not a swimmer and he was nervous about the fish in the lake. He swam the length of Mille Lacs in 2006. In 2007 he went on a diet and lost 100 pounds. 2008 he learned how to ride a unicycle and that was a very tough event. Recognition for Kinship, mentor recruitment and raising over $90,000 for the program have been the highlights of this for Gary This year he and his sonJackson are going to rollerblade to Washington DC . He still doesn't know how to stop on his skates yet. He is excited about the "WoW" factor of this new idea. August 13th-September 9th is planned for the trip. Gary invited Paul Koering to be in final photo (he made the last few steps of Gary's MN walk and got his picture in the paper). They are expecting to do 50-65 miles per day with Lisa, his wife, following in the car. CTC is working on a Where's Walters GPS tracking system, web site, and communication system to keep him in touch with people at home. Gary's theory is that if a short fat guy can so these stunts, anyone can be a mentor. His presentation was taped and will be part of the local news on Lakeland Public Television since this was the official announcement of this year's event.
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes

Rumor Corner
  • Jeff Fitch had to admit that either he is a lousy joke teller or Karen M just doesn't get jokes very well. You decide.
  • LoAnn was signing important papers giving away her first born!!
  • The Camp Sertoma crew could not come to lunch today--they are too busy. Help anyone? Keep it in mind for next year.
  • Welcome back Senator Koering--our Loannism of the day--Miss Senator Koering? Paul remarked, I dont get to see you very often so this is a $400 meal since I have been dilgently paying my dues."
  • Gary Walters introduced himself as President of the Gary Walters Stupid Club. Bryan Lehman qualified to be in the club just by being dumb enough to ask about it.
  • Happy "Fortieth"to Cathe Picek. Also Art Becker!
  • George Moore tried to collect sixty dollars from Senator Koering for missing all the brat sales.
  • Thanks Beth Burnard for collecting Pam's quarters.
  • Bill Goers as sub sergeant fined our Prez for her great singing voice.
  • Art Becker had a photo in the Brainerd paper again.
  • Mike Boen paid a garbage in garbage out on the radio fine.
  • John Raboin is getting a fancy new car.
  • Bob Ehrich tried to start the neighborhood on fire-neighbors flocking to watch.
  • If this was a $400 meal than Bill is scared about Paul's influence on the health care issue.
