Program
Anna Struss was originally scheduled to travel with Up with People right out of high school. The program was canceled due to lack of funding. She finished college and was working in interior design. That job did not work out and as she expressed it she was waiting for the door to open behind that closed one. She contacted Up with People looking for a "job" and ended up auditioning and becoming one of the older members of the troupe. Anna is looking forward to her role as "mentor" to some of the younger crowd. This is an international leadership program that puts more emphasis on morals and life outlook rather than the talents of singing and dancing. The group tours for six months and Anna needs donations to support her tour through the southwest, Mexico and Europe. There are four other Minnesota candidates. Anna emphasized the global education received by troupe members since housing is provided by local families. "I am really looking forward to being an ambassador for the state of Minnesota and the Brainerd Lakes area," she remarked She intends to seriously promote the Brainerd Lakes Area on her trip. Donations were collected to help Anna on her way and amounted to over four hundred dollars. Kathy Williams talked about her wonderful experiences when her family hosted members of the group. Up with People reminds us that it is not the things of this world that will make us happy but our ability to make a difference in the lives someone else. Since 1965 they have been spreading music, fun and community service throughout the world. Their schedule at each place they go includes getting involved in a project for that community. One could almost call them traveling Sertomans!! Up with People has a website if you would like more information and you can contact Anna at annamariestruss@hotmail.com if you or your business would like to sponsor her participation.
Pam Sachs took notes, Bonnie Cumberland counted noses and Bill Goers took wonderful induction photos on the Mississippi Belle. Thanks to all.

Of Note
Keep Craig Dunmire in your prayers--he is recovering after a bout in the hospital with pancreatitis.

The installation of officers was continued in front of the group today. LoAnn commented on how well everything went and how it epitomized her efforts to make Sertoma both rewarding and a social event. She is trying to promote a more "fun" year for all. "I am honored to be your president and look forward to your input."

Cathe Picek sent apologies with Jeff Olson--everyone at Camp did appreciate all the help. Jeff encouraged everyone to pick up their volunteer shirts.

Business Notes
Having an extended Fourth of July weekend anyway? Looking for something fun to do on Sunday evening. Ernies has matchbox races, fiddler crab races and Sumo Wrestling. Swing on out after 10 p.m. for all the excitement and fun.

  • Air travelers may now carry liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bag when going through security checkpoints.
  • With certain exceptions for prescription and over-the-counter medicines, baby formula, breast milk, and juice, and other essential liquids, gels, and aerosols, the following rules apply to all liquids, gels, and aerosols you want to carry through a security checkpoint.
  • All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.
  • All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.
  • Each traveler must remove their quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.
Rumor Corner
  • Queen LoAnn changed the room around. Pam Sachs got to move to a new corner after seven or eight years of being bad!! LoAnn received her tiara at the induction.
  • Steve Mau has talent--those of us who saw him in the church play were impressed. He has passed this talent on to his daughter who is in Willie Wonka at the college this week!! Paul Gropper took his kids and says the play is fabulous and fun.
  • Attendance was a bit sparse, people must be vacationing.
  • The dog pound had a bit of a lilt in their intros today--maybe it is because of their proximity to the queen. Mark Korte pretended he forgot who he was today.
  • Carole Winegar's brave shooting partner introduced himself today--way to go Jeff F. A certain anonymous tooth fairy was a very generous contributor to our Up With People visitor today!!
  • Rumor is Bill Goers passed out.
  • Steve Rose is on the naughty list.
  • Karen Munsterteiger is offering to lick something for Steve Rose.
  • Terry Curtis admitted it was a happy hour recruitment of him as sergeant. LoAnn used the same pick up line on Nate Grotzky but it didn't work.
  • Shameless self promotion Jeff Raboin on the cover the of the DEX phone book. Terry admitted he was a Stephen Lastovich fan. Terry recommended a llama as John's signature animal or even a Munstertiger.
  • Paul Gropper and Tood Alguire missed the induction. They had to pay--Pam S volunteered her dollar since she did miss the occasion. It was actually a happy fine that she didn't get to announce--her nephew is getting married and she was busy signing up to be the official wedding photographer this Saturday.
  • Mid Life Crisis Capital of the world--houses are big, boats are big and men are well--Cross Lake. Anyone who has made any money off of Denny Hecker needed to put a dollar in the pot. Evidently our sergeant is a Cross Lake Denny Hecker expert.
  • Karen Owen was wearing her pole dancing shirt. She actually just said she looked like she belonged on a pole. David Pundt didn't have too far to go to be in serious competition with Karen.
  • Everyone who voted for Franken the sexually confused therapist on Saturday Night Live needed to pay a buck. No one would admit voting for him.
  • Happy wedding anniversary to Mark Korte.
  • Loann and Terry have to quit meeting at happy hours.
  • Speaking of dumb blonde jokes--Queen LoAnn turned to our guest Anna and asked her name and then remarked, "Oh I know you".
  • Sergeant for the year: one very brave soldier Terry Curtis did volunteer. LoAnn is still begging, pleading and groveling to get more help.
  • Anna does talk Minnesotan for sure you betcha but she claims she tries not to. She also has been singing since she was born. Everyone discouraged her from singing a duet with LoAnn. (The one who was on a "ship" for her induction. She claimed she was on a gangplank so it had to be a ship)
  • Smile CHARLEY was LoAnn's parting remark.
