Program

America’s 2,663 YMCAs serve more than 20.2 million people each year, uniting men, women and children of all ages, races, faiths, backgrounds, abilities and income levels and Randy Klinger from our local organization was today's guest speaker. His purpose was to update us on what is happening with Brainerd's organization. Simply stated Randy summarizes their mission as working to become "Guardians of fragile spirits and champions of the underdog." All of their programs are not aimed at "keeping score" but instead to promote skills and sportsmanship, have fun, and fulfill a community need that is becoming more and more pronounced every day. The life expectancy of today's children is less than that of their parents and it is directly related to the sedentary life style and poor eating habits that have resulted in 1 of every 2 children being labeled "inactive". Sixty five percent of the people in the United States are overweight. The Y is working with the school system and the health care providers to do something proactive about this problem. They are also currently working closely with public education in terms of dealing with the cuts that will directly affect physical activities offered the the young people in the Brainerd area. The YMCA has been in existence since 1962 and their recent renovation has allowed them to expand their staff from 34 (10 years ago) to 120 including our own Anita Travica who was asked to clone herself by Randy. Their budget has gone from $600,000 to nearly 1.5 million in that same time period. They continue to offer a sliding scale fee to accommodate the growing list of people who cannot afford the regular fees. Randy invited us to their charity ball which will be held this year at Maddens on May 17th and will feature the Johnny Holm Band. This event and Y Partners helps to fund many worthwhile activities. Other featured programs included Youth In Government, Silver Sneakers, Teen Scene and the women's dodgeball and basketball leagues. If you have any questions about YMCA, feel free to contact either Randy or Anita.

Thanks Steve Mau for taking notes.

Remember: As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you can't be there.

Of Note
A big thank you from Love Lake read, "My surgery went well and the biopsy on the lymph nodes was negative. I would like to thank my Sertoma friends for their love, friendship, support and prayers. I appreciate each and every one of you and love our Sertoma Club. Karla Nelson

Aaron Meester also thanked everyone for their well wishes on the birth of the twins.

Our prayers go out to Les and Lucy Franz. They are dealing with some serious health issues plaguing Lucy.

Business Notes
Anna Gorecky, Paul Heinlein, and Mary Marana are all going to jail for MS and are looking for sponsors to get them out. Anna put wanted posters on the tables today--they were very popular with certain men folk who paid a fine for pocketing them.

Our group donated $250 to the Soup Kitchen.

C and L Distributing sponsored 3 buses for the YMCA for Winter Wonderland. Randy shared the heartfelt thank you especially from the grandmother of 5 who has custody of the children and no transportation. Ted Anderson was a guest today and hopefully will be joining our group to represent this community minded business.

  • Pam just wanted to share her Christmas present with all-it's nice to come home from Hawaii to Minnesota to enjoy your first ride in the restored one horse open sleigh.
  • Lori Rubin got lucky on Paul's birthday--inquiring minds want to know if Paul got lucky too.
  • Welcome back Jerry Keimig.
  • LoAnn Reponen receives this week's Pronunciation Queen award-she practiced all week to correct her Sairatoma gaffe.
  • We are all happy for Kathy Bittner Lee who found Trickles (her little missing dog) after a three day search.
  • Curling lost its first game but it was down the last "rock".
  • Julia is now using to legal paper to bind people to contracts for services. Volunteer for bucket checking folks.
  • Much obliged featured a nice letter from Vern and Coralie Warner about the Winter Wonderland and what a wonderful experience it was for her grandsons.
  • Sneaky Steve Mau cost all of his seatmates big fines by taking notes--he knew with all the coverage of his business merger he was in trouble!!
  • Tami was overheard to make a remark that sounded like "best rookie party ever" to Bryan J and since he was part of the Ritz group he took offense and got even as the substitute sergeant. Thanks to George Moore for filling in the other gap.
