Legend
has it that a truck carrying fish from Lake of the Woods
broke down in Motley in 1937 and Ed Morey traded some of the
corn he and his family were growing to sell for the fish.
The need to distribute the fish immediately to the local
area lead to an enterprise that has survived until today.
Although Morey's has since been sold and reacquired by Multi
Foods, Loren Morey, Ed's son, continues to be involved.
Since its launch, Morey's has grown to be a leading
seafood manufacturer and distributor. Today, Morey's Seafood
International manufactures hundreds of products under the
Morey's label. These products are delivered and distributed
to retail and food service clientele nationwide. The company
also has five distribution locations that deliver a full
line of fresh, frozen and prepared fish and seafood. Company
headquarters are located in Minneapolis, MN. Morey's
processing is done in Motley. Our guest, Steve Frank, runs
the retail stores. He too has a long association with the
fish business and Moreys. Steve joined us to encourage us to
visit their new store which opened recently. The original
Brainerd building was state of the art when Morey's opened
it. Steve answered questions about the business which
included unusual orders. They ship all over the country
including one special order of lutefisk to Key West. Bob
Nibbe injected some humor with a question about specials
after the big fish contest. Steve talked about things like
frog legs, seaweed salad, escargot and rolling sushi. He
also reminded us that lobster is for lovers. He also gave
everyone a "treat" and a discount coupon. |
