Bob Sherman put in a special appearance at Sertoma today
to bring a very important issue to the attention of the Club and
to issue an invitation. He introduced the speaker who is the
Executive Director of the Central MN Council on Aging as well as
urging us to be a part of the solution to a large problem
looming on the horizon--how to deal with an aging population.
Some startling facts that the Club learned included: by the year
2020 more people will be over 65 than will be attending school,
the over 65 population will go from 73,000 in the fourteen
county area called Central Minnesota to 91,000, 54% of the
communities have made no plans to deal with the results
including labor shortages as well as long term care issues, and
the fact that many businesses are not only facing labor
shortages but loss of productivity from caregivers. A big issue
is the significant increase of older people who live alone and
do not have family to take care of them. Currently 91% of long
term care is provided by family. For each 1% decline in family
care, the State of Minnesota currently must increase the budget
of state offered services by thirty million dollars. Lori
Vrolson encouraged everyone to be aware of the issue and to
volunteer for the new task force which will be called "Brainerd
for a Lifetime". Brainerd is especially central to the problem
because of its attractiveness as a retirement community. The
meeting will be held at the Arboretum on Thursday, January 24th
from 1-4 p.m. (Download
the meeting invitation pdf) Anyone planning on attending should RSVP at
218-829-9345. If you are dealing with issues of senior care and
need help with the issue, make a note of the Senior Linkage Line
which coordinates services-800-333-2433. |

| Greeter
Schedule |
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there. |
