Program
Brainerd Sertoma Club - Sandy KleistSandy Kleist was today’s speaker, instituting a new part to our programs. According to Program Chairman Joe Schulte, we will be featuring one of our members once a month in the future.

Sandy explained her job at LSS Financial Counseling Services of Minnesota. She mainly works with people who are in financial crisis offering counseling, debt reduction, budget advice, debt management, housing counseling, and many more services under the umbrella of the largest non-profit in Minnesota.

She gave us an insight into the new programs that are a result of the change in the bankruptcy laws. Clients are required to attend counseling both before and after filing and she offers this service in person, over the phone and online. She is also working with reverse mortgages which are quite new.

Sandy calls herself a “counselor on call” and she explained that her job is challenging since she never knows from day to day what it will entail. Her office is located in Baxter with close connections to the Duluth location.

Sandy also offers many educational opportunities including some in cooperation with the college. Sandy has been very active in Sertoma since she joined three years ago.

Thanks Gene Farone for Taking Notes!!!!

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. Sertoman of the Day
Sertoman of the Day - Rick BesmehnToday we all got to see the many sides of long-time Sertoman Rick Besmehn. He began with some amusing anecdotes about meeting his wife Veronica, his two children and three grandchildren, and how he began his business Lakes Area Body Shop which is located across from BIR on Highway 371.

Anyone who has been to a Ditch Pick is familiar with his work environment. He has been a member since 1984 and he held up the fine bucket which he supplied to the club way back when (he definitely has aged better than the bucket). Rick is a member of our beloved “Dog Pound”, a group of swell “old” guys who are the backbone of our membership. Rick is always around with his engaging grin to add to the merriment or do the hard work. In fact he has held most of the leadership roles in the club.

Rick ended his speech on a serious note when he remarked, “Ask someone to join Sertoma and you can claim a Dave Burggraph or a Carole Paulson in your Sertoman of the Day speech.” Thanks for your loyalty and years of hard work Rick. His most embarrassing moment was not half as fascinating as his recounting of fooling the birds of prey while out hunting coyotes.

Of Note
Thank you from Tom Kotula: I just want to expresss my thanks in writing for the surprise award last Wednesday. I really feel honored! It is certainly great to have an organization like yours that is so involved in our community. All of your members should be proud. This is what makes our area a great place to live. Thanks again!

Rory Coit - Sertoman of the Year 2005-2006 with Mike BoenCongratulations Rory Coit - Mike Boen was very proud to introduce the 2006 Sertoman of the Year. Rory Coit was the choice of the committee which consists of past honorees. Even though last year’s selection of Scott Fisher broke away from tradition, the committee felt that Rory’s outstanding term as president meant that the award had to go to the most deserving candidate.
