Dr.
Thomas J. Kotula was named the winner of the prestigious Service
to Mankind Award given by the Brainerd Noon Sertoma to a recipient
who epitomizes the ideals of the Club. When accepting his award he
stated, “We are all one community and I am very proud of the unity
that is developing in this area.”
Since he moved to Brainerd in 1958 and started his family
dental practice, he has been involved in many local projects. His
service club activities includes the earlier version of the
Jaycees and the Kiwanis. He is a two time president of the
Brainerd Chamber of Commerce, past president of his church
council, a member of the Central Lakes College Foundation, and a
board member and president of the American National Bank. Through
his efforts, the historic landmark water tower was repaired and
repainted to remain a part of the Brainerd horizon. He helped to
start the chamber golf tournament and raise the funds for the new
Welcome Center on Highway 371. He has been a staunch supporter of
Ski Gull, volunteering and donating many things that have helped
Ski Gull continue to provide a free ski program to over 16,000
area 6th graders.
Although retired from his practice he continues to be a very
active citizen volunteering his time and talents to improve our
community. He has never sought recognition, but his calm demeanor
and clear way of thinking make him stand out as a leader. His
philosophy can be summed up with the statement he made, “You need
to be involved in the community to give something back. Many
people came before us and helped make this a great place to live
and we need to do the same for those who come after us." |

Schedule |
|
| Remember:
Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job
to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a
ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be
divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club
Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

| Sertoman of
the Day |
|
Trevor
Harting was today’s honored Sertoman. He is a close neighbor of
President Clausen since the offices of his physical therapy
practice are in the same building as Pipe Jaffray on Design Drive
in Baxter.
Trevor worked at two different locations after moving back to
Brainerd in 1998 and then opened up his office. He was born in
Brainerd and has been a member of Sertoma for 6th months. His
sponsor was Tami Webb.
He has been married for eleven years and has three children
including a 9 month old son “who never sleeps”. Trevor is fluent
in Spanish or so he thought until he was trying to show off for
his in laws on a Mexican vacation and instead of requesting the
check in Spanish he asked for La Placenta and earned a ribbing
from the wait staff for several days. |

Dave Burggraph gave us a heads up on Camp Sertoma which will meet
this weekend. The group mainly meets to make Camp Sertoma happen
and although it has 50 members, it is a core group that ends up
doing all the work. They are talking about a different way to
manage an expand Camp Sertoma activities. |
