Program
Brainerd Sertoma Club Robin Loftis introduced today’s two speakers who included Jhonna Loftis and Kathy Bahma (pictured on left). Jhonna is a very recent recipient of a heart transplant and Kathy has had hers for 9 years.

Kathy goes out to speak to schools and groups to encourage people to become involved as donors. Ninety thousand people are on the waiting list for transplants of all kinds (heart, lungs, kidney, small intestine, livers) in the United States right now. Every day about 17 of them die. In our five state region that includes 2,254. Many people need transplants due to genetic factors such as Kathy’s. She represents a group called Life Source that coordinates and links donors with recipients. They also provide an extensive network of support mostly for the donor families but also for the recipients. That is how Kathy got to meet her donor family and how she became a “member” of that large group. As an only child she appreciates her new siblings and relatives and stays in touch with them.

Jhonna answered questions about her experience. She explained that there is a 4-6 hour window where the recipient must be available to receive the donated heart. She stayed in contact with Life Source through her cell phone and waited in the hospital 8 hours. The amazing thing is that she was out of the hospital in about a week.

Both Kathy and Jhonna must stay on anti rejection drugs for the rest of their lives. These drugs are very expensive. Both women encouraged all to add the donor tag to their driver’s licenses and include the wish to donate organs in their living wills.

Kathy left us with some wisdom—”life is a journey and some of the hills are might big but everything is worthwhile..

Thanks Karla Nelson for Taking Notes!!!!

Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Patty Hartman.

Of Note
Rumor Corner
  • Charlie’s Invocation prayed for all the good-looking Sertomans and the not so good looking ones.
  • Apologies to Allen Hall, Dennis Lutterman, and Jim ORourke for the mix up in the picture captions last week.
  • Charlie has taken up free fall sky diving and Raboin has opened Raboin’s Fish and Chips.
  • Art Confused Becker must have celebrated his birthday too much last week.
  • Mike Boen donated his winnings to Shoes for Pat (his wife).
  • We had a double Pooch fine since he escaped the clutches of the sergeants last week.
  • It doesn’t pay to sit in the dog pound and win the ticket drawing—the sergeants immediately think it is worth a $2 per person fine.

It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
